Canterbury Bed and Breakfast Inns | Places to Stay in Canterbury

April 24, 2023 Matilde Konrad

Encircled by medieval walls, Canterbury is doused in history. In the Middle Ages, Canterbury’s pilgrimage-site status made it the setting of Chaucer’s seminal "Canterbury Tales," while today, cobbled streets and the 6th-century Canterbury Cathedral secure this city as one of England’s must-visit destinations.

An excellent stay

Vicky is a wonderful host in her lovely property. The location has on site parking and is still an easy walk to the centre of Canterbury. The breakfast room was light and airy with great service and good food. Our room and bathroom were spacious, comfortable and clean. It was a delight to stay at Yorke Lodge.

Noisiest roomi e ever stayed in

Reviewed By zoeg406

I’ve never stayed in such a noisy room. Although the room itself was nice and had everything you would expect, trying to sleep was near enough impossible. Banging, kids screaming. I stopped here to save driving the 200 miles back home in one day. To be honest, I’m worried about driving back because I’m going to be so tired through lack of sleep. Serious sound proofing needed. Ruined my stay .

We travelled as a group of 6, taking up three of the rooms (1, 3 & 5), we were greeted by Stuart who provided a great run down of the Lodge, its grounds and local places to eat including a map and directions. All of the rooms were well sized and had drink and TV facilities, everyone agreed the beds and rooms were comfortable and we all settled well. As a group we enjoy playing cards and board games so the large table outside was perfect for in the daytime and Stuart was happy to let us use the shared breakfast room later in the evening which we particularly appreciated. Whilst we did have three of the rooms we did not take up all of them however we were never interrupted or disturbed by the other guests and there was plenty of parking on site for all of our cars. Breakfast was great and all served hot and correct (6 people all wanting different combinations is sometimes a problem), and again even though there were other guests this did not delay our food and it was all served in a very reasonable time. You can tell great amount of time, effort and pride has been poured into the lodge and the results are amazing, it is now top on our list for any return trips to Canterbury or the local area.

Very Nice Room!

A little apprehensive booking a Wetherspoon hotel but pleasantly surprised. Lovely comfortable room. Lacking any info on how to connect to WiFi or on duty staff or Canterbury sights...shame. Fabulous helpful staff who were pleased to help. Probably as in much of Canterbury, parking was a problem but once we knew our way around we settled on Castle Street which was capped at £10 per day. We could see the cathedral from our window which felt pretty special!

Rooms are immaculate, comfortable, the beds are really comfortable and the soundproofing works perfect as Canterbury was quite noisy saturday night but we all had an excellent nights sleep!

Good facilities. Room was clean with mod cons e.g. swipe card door, fridge in room, decent shower etc. Well presented and clean throughout. Unfortunately a lot of noise on stay. We purposely picked Chaucer room as had read quieter at back of building. We are both used to noise living in a city centre but unfortunately we were still awoken by it Could have forgiven that but the building noise, not mentioned anywhere on website or booking, was disappointing. We checked in and whilst enjoying our bubbly in room found a builder stationed outside our window on the first floor which was slightly embarassing. Next morning drilling and similar started before 9am. We read later the restaurant is being extended but is a shame they don't warn you of this work on booking Continental breakfast served to room and decent - just makes you slightly on edge awaiting a knock on the door sometime around 8.30am so you can't relax waking up. In our instance a conversation was instigated despite my partner clearly being in their underpants and breakfast offered to he dropped in the room while I was sat in bed. Kind but slightly intrusive. Overall room facilities good but bizarre they don't serve a proper breakfast in such a well regarded restaurant. Noise levels beyond what we felt tolerable especially building work and builders outside the window not declared at booking. Breakfast to the room good effort but strange in the context. Pleasant stay but wouldn't choose again. Impersonal experience, barely saw them unfortunately.

I was booked into this hotel for a work event but it would not have been my choice. The building has some charm as a series of terraced houses joined together but this means it is mainly low ceilings, uneven floors and many stairs. I was in a tiny room in the basement with very little room to move. It was noisy from the street and also from other rooms - every time someone ran a tap, has a shower or flushed the loo there was a torrent of water. I couldn’t turn the radiator off and because there is no-one on duty out of hours I couldn’t do anything about it. Also strong cooking smells from the kitchen. The manager was pleasant enough but hardly ever on duty. Location is close to Canterbury W station but I could not have lasted more than one night cooped up in a tiny, over-heated room with very little natural light.
