Great facility as expected from YHA

I was camping but had full use of all facilities in the hostel - drying room, toilets, showers, kitchen and lounge. The camper's shower was hot and powerful. The kitchen was well stocked but quite small for the number of guests. The lounge was cosy but lacking in power points. Lots of great walks around and lovely cafes in the village. Overall a wonderful stay

A proper warm welcome with lashings of Lake District hospitality

From the moment we stepped into the hotel and Ray welcomed us and made sure we had everything that we needed, we knew that we'd all enjoy this place. The rooms were spacious, bright and impeccably clean. The breakfast was hearty and scrumptious and nothing was too much trouble. It was lovely that we were encouraged to have a starter in addition to the 'main event'. The House Special of yogurt, museli and compote is not to be missed. We had wonderful food in the bar in the evening and if the Steak and Ale pie is on the menu, make sure that you try it! Sitting in the sun with wonderful food washed down with a pint of Bridge Blonde ale is a memory that will last a long time. After dinner, we retreated to the lounge and played cards as a family! It was so nice to spend time together having fun like that. The kids were enthused enough to repeatedly thank us for an "amazing holiday" even though we'd only gone for a couple of nights. We'll be back without a doubt.

This is my second visit to the only campsite in Buttermere. The first time I went it was summer and the school holidays. It was so crowded, unpleasant, noisy etc. But I knew the wasn’t the fault of the site (unless they banned children and limited numbers). This time I visited midweek outside of school holidays, and what a difference. I had a large section of the site to myself. It was quiet from dawn till dusk…. The toilets and shower (50p) are new so that was a pleasant surprise, but yes, basic other than that, ie no charging points for phone, no phone signal, no fridge/ice box available. Didn’t bother me though. I stayed one night and was allowed to leave my car in the car park well into the 2nd day which saved me paying to park somewhere, I was very grateful. Key points Don’t come in school holidays if you want a quiet getaway. You have to carry your stuff over a bridge, not ideal in bad weather or if you have a lot of baggage. The check in is away from the site, at the cafe by the farm (get food from there, it’s amazing!) Ground is rocky, bring a mallet. Walks from tent are abundant, with bus to Keswick frequent.

Hassness Country House

Hassness House is located a mile from Buttermere Village in its own extensive grounds on the shore of Buttermere with all rooms facing the lake and the fells beyond. You can visit some of the more famous mountains and others, just as beautiful but less well known. Refurbished for the 2018 season, the house offers accommodation in twins, doubles and single rooms, either with ensuite facilities or sharing high powered modern showers just across the hall from the rooms. The comfy lounge is the perfect place to relax after a day in the mountains. Here you can read a book or simply enjoy one of the most dramatic views in the world. The madding crowds don't come anywhere nearby.

The Perfect base for exploring the Lake District

Thoroughly enjoyed a short walking Autumn break and its the perfect base for hiking, very comfortable guest house accommodation.Managers Debbie and Laurie offer some lovely meals and a warm welcome. Hassness Country House is ideal for exploring Lake Buttermere and nearby to cafes, pubs and this off the beaten track area of the Lake District. Its a lovely place for holidays in the Spring when the surrounding fields are carpeted with bluebells, relaxing & peaceful Summer hiking getaways and colourful and cosy Autumn breaks. A year round hiking break winner and a special place which we enjoyed and marvelled at the surrounding nature and scenery just steps away from Hassness and in full spectacular view from most guest rooms and parts of the house. Rooms were nicely and very comfortably decorated and a drying rack for muddy hiking boots and guest kitchen means we felt very looked after! Private beach for wild swims in the Lake, a pleasant garden with red squirrels and birds make this a comfortable, superbly situated and gem of a place for a year round amazing break. Thank you again for a wonderful walking break! ?
