The original location on the Barkhor was recently demolished- it is now about a 10 minute walk SE of the Barkhor, on the busy thoroughfare Jiangsu Road. It doesn't have the atmosphere of the Barhkor, but still a convenient location, across the street from the Muslim Quarter, 150m south of the Grand Mosque. Judging from the past reviews, my guess is the food has even improved. I ate here everyday for almost a week while in Lhasa. I was traveling over Chinese and Tibetan New Year, so almost every restaurant in the city was closed. Being Nepali run, New Mandala was one of the few still open. This gave me the chance to try a wide range of their menu, for breakfast and dinner, and I was never disappointed. I especially enjoyed the Tibetan Amdo Native Soup. The Nepalese set meals were delicious and a great deal, and even the Western style Yak steak was very good.
Photo menu but no English descriptions and they don't speak English. We ended up with so-so small plates of stir- fried vegetables, baked mushrooms and a sweet cheese bread. They forgot to give us napkins or anything to eat on (like a plate) and the girl pouring beer didn't know what she was doing, so I got a glass full of suds.

Very well-known restaurant among tourists for dining in Lhasa downtown. Go upstairs and get the top view of very bustling Barkhor Street and watching all the people circling in the same clockwise direction. Very pleasant atmosphere! The taste of Tibetan meal is very good and totally unforgettable. Come and worth have a try!

Wonderful food in a cozy restaurant gives you a variety of options were many dishes come highly recommended.
A convenient place for lunch before or after the temple visit. They serve Chinese Indian Nepalese and local dishes. The Yak steak was unique and more tender than local beef. The masala tea was weak. The space is large with a small kitchen. Be prepared to wait if the place is crowded. On a whole a decent meal.

As we came, we saw this tea house very crowded with local people (could be hundreds of them). We looked for empty seats for a while and finally found a few as some people left.It seemed that local people came here for daily social purposes. Our tour guide said many people came here also for the milk tea. He said: we also made milk tea with similar ingredients at home, but somehow they served the best one.It was quite fun seeing the waitresses going here and there refilling the cups and charge the customers right after their cups were refilled. The tea was actually way too sweet for me, but I still think it worthwhile to come and sit here for a while.

After touring Jokhang Temple we were brought here, first to shop then to eat. We had to pre-order our dishes opposed to sharing. On our table was chicken curry, vegetable curry, sizzling yak with fries and noodles, yak pizza, cheese pizza and for the most part it seems our group liked their lunch. The servings were quite large. I ordered the sizzling yak with fries. Was not expecting the noodles or steamed vegetables. The yak was cooked nicely and came with a gravy over the top. Mostly what it lacked was flavor. My veggies were great as were the fries. Our service did seem slow for pre-ordered food and half the table finished before some had barely been served. Another not so good thing is stairs have to be climbed to the restaurant. Good thing there is a Western toilet.

Tasty, reasonably priced Tibetan cuisine. Great place to grab a nice cold beer while enjoying delicious food.
This restaurant is well-located on the bazaar/market street in Lhasa. You go up the stairs to the second level -- it looks like the place has been converted out of old apartments, etc. The food was simple and tasty -- and quick to arrange, so it's a great choice if you are super hungry or in a hurry! I recommend the bobi, a chicken and/or vegetable wrap with a a cream cheese-like side.

This is clearly a restaurant made for tourists. The restaurant decor is colorful and tasteful . They have great teas including a Fiji berry ginger herbs that felt great for the altitude. Food included Indian type food and some Tibetan like the wontons and yak stew. This place Is hard to find the first time, call for directions beforehand this is inside an alley in the market. You have to walk there, no cars are allowed .

We stumbled onto this restaurant and were thrilled. First visit we had Yak dish and a vegetable curry. Both were excellent. Second visit tried the tomato soup and the fried cauliflower...again also excellent. Service was efficient and prompt, restaurant was good value. There is a rooftop terrace which overlooks the Jokhang Temple. Would definitely return again and definitely recommend.
