The town is on the River Mole. According to the 2001 census the civil parish of South Molton had a population of 4,093, increasing to 5,108 at the 2011 Census. The town also has an electoral ward with the same name. The population of this ward at the same census was 4,875 We have therefore the unusual situation where the town is larger than the ward. The town was one of the boroughs reformed by the Municipal Reform Act 1835. It retained this status as a municipal borough until 1967, when it became a rural borough in the South Molton Rural District.

Arrived late having tried and failed to get into a well known eatery not far from here.Found the sign almost by accident and thought why not? What a welcome on a chilly wet day not only from the landlord and landlady but from the locals.Despite at getting late for lunch there was plenty on offer and the locals made it clear that the lady of the house cooked all the food from local sources.The food was superb.Now this isn't a flash gastro pub, it's a "local" with a proper coal/log fire, old books on the shelves and artifacts on the walls that look as though they have been there for decades!If you are within 30 miles of this place anytime soon, visit. You will not be disappointed.Finally, thank you to all in the bar that Sunday for the warm welcome and the chat.

Nothing wrong with the service; the woman behind the bar was friendly and helpful enough. Entrance not unattractive with plants and row of paperbacks in the window. As for the interior environment - mmh! Well, actually, not that great. The main bar area is large with smaller room to the side and frankly all a bit basic. Drinks were fine and a quite nice County Best as one of the real ales. As for the food, we decided on sandwich/bruschetta and they were okay; certainly no problems in terms of quantity! Value about average I guess. Large parking area on the other side of the road, with campsite behind.

Although it was fairly early, we stopped here to get some food as a lot of other places were closed, the welcome was warm but the atmosphere was almost none existant, the beer was good mind, we opted elsewhere for food. Shame really!

The Coaching Inn is a traditional local pub that seems to have changed little over the years. It has a large bar area with friendly and helpful bar and kitchen staff. Meals are equally traditional with generous portions. The whitebait starter was tasty with a battered and batter-free mix, the chilli concarne was extra spicy, and the heavily battered potato-based fishcakes with âsautéâ potatoes (more like very thin-cut roast potatoes) was perhaps a little disappointing. The beer was good and the central town location with car park makes for easy access.

We found this pub by chance whilst out walking one evening. If is full of character and has friendly staff. What we can't understand is how my husbands turbot was cooked to perfection and he said it was very good. My fish and chips was a.major disappointment. The chips were boring (I think shop bought) and the batter on the fish was to hard to eat . Such a shame.

We went here on a Monday which is the regular chef's night off so no specials on the menu. The main menu was good and had Hogs pudding on it. Never heard of this before so my partner ordered it. Very nice it was too. The portions were good sized and.presented really nicely. Staff were helpful and friendly. Yes I would go back. Dogs welcome as well.

Yes this can certainly be described as a great pub with a great pub atmosphere and on the plus side; They also have a terrific food menu with cracking tasting food! Loved it!!Now we had a selection of fish, steak and chicken dishes. All of these were dishes were wonderful. The place was packed, evey table was taken, we were advised the food may take a while, but that was it was also cooked from fresh. Therefore we certainly didn't mind waiting. They have a great selection of gins, cider and beer, so be sure to walk or use public transport!!Wonderful, looking forward to going back already
