As a frequent solo traveller, I often judge pubs on the type of welcome you get when walking in on your own. Here you get the warmest welcome possible from a delightful landlady who is obviously adored by the locals. I just wish there were more places like this. Everything a pub should be!

Went as a multi generational family to one of their lunches on a Saturday. Wonderful, inventive and inspiring dishes which were presented well with obvious care and consideration for their provenance. Outstanding value for money and am looking forward to a return visit. Only problem we had was finding trill farm but easy once we consulted the website and not satnav- doh!

A friend and I decided as a last minute decision to go to Tuckers. Fortunately we were offered a table (most of the restaurant was booked) on the left hand side as you go in. The food was lovely, I had the Smoked Haddock Florentine which was exceptional and my friend had the scampi which was plump and delicious! We didn't have room for dessert! If I had to mention a negative it is that the area we were in suffers from the very loud hand drying machine noise in the ladies toilet which is situated close by. Apart from that the girls serving and behind the bar were friendly and charming.

The food here at the New Inn is consistently excellent. Today we had one of Mandy's fantastic Ploughmans, beautifully presented and so delicious and Smoked Mackerel with Sourdough bread, equally as delicious. Totally recommend this lovely Devon pub, which we so lucky to have in this lovely village. Thank you to both Mandy and Carey

(Would prefer without the cream filling as don't like it and so scraped it out but my husband enjoyed this with his Victoria sponge!) some lovely specials on the board for dining. Alas we didn't have time. Many thanks for your great review! We are happy to hear you enjoyed the coffee which is an organic blend from Extract in Bristol. River Cottage HQ

Reviewed By Jane T

For my birthday my children gave me a voucher for two of us to go to a River Cottage Summer Lunch at the River Cottage Headquarters off Trinity Hill. So my husband and I went the following Wednesday. I was quite excited as I’d never been there although its almost on our door step. It was a very stormy, wet and misty day though, which was a pity as the view would have been lovely across the Valley. You park in a large spacious area at the top and then get into a trailer attached to a tractor which takes you down the steep, narrow, rickety road to the Farm. First, we went into a Yurt, which had a lovely wood fire burning in there and were given a five-minute talk about the area and also a glass of Brandy Cider, which was delicious. We were then free to wander around the farm; My husband and I were quite disappointed that the areas away from the cottage were very untidy and rather let go. The pigs were hiding out of the rain as were any other cows and stock. The plants and flowers near the main house, were very pretty though so I enjoyed looking at them and the fruit. We then went into the long converted (very posh) Barn for dinner. There were almost 60 people and we were seated at two long tables, after checking on the seating plan where we were to sit. It was nice chatting to others who were a mixture of local – Devon and Dorset and holidaymakers. A Chef gave a brief explanation of the food that was being served, he said it was locally sourced and vegetables and beef were either from their own stock or next-door Trill Farm, which was good to know. The booking had told them I was Gluten intolerant and they seemed to handle that and other people’s allergies well. First someone came around for drinks order which is charged separately. I purchased the cheapest bottle of white wine which cost £18, I think it was Italian and very nice. To start there was bread and dipping balsamic with oil. However, the very small dish containing this was between 4 and the other couple beside us dunked all their bread in the dish and we had no balsamic left for us. The gluten-free bread I had was actually two small slices of bought bread which was quite dry, so I think it might have been out of the freezer. So I only nibbled a bit. The starter was nice and the main course was delicious. However the vegetables, new potatoes, was in a small bowl for four to share. Again, the other couple took four potatoes each leaving us three to share! So when the waitress came by my husband asked if we could please have some more potatoes and indicated we only had the three in the bowl between us! This seemed to be a problem and she wasn’t sure that there were any. Really? Surely potatoes are cheap and plentiful. She went off to see whether she could find any more and after a while came back with a few more in a bowl. No sooner had she put them down than the people beside us helped themselves again, so me and my husband still only had two small new potatoes each, which is just not enough. The desert, coffee and marshmallows at the end were also very nice. As we were leaving, we went up to the Bar to pay for our wine. It was the same lady who wasn’t very happy to get us more potatoes. She said we owed £24.50! I showed her on the menu which wine we had purchased and she seemed reluctant to agree. This actually slightly spoilt the afternoon as there was no reason to argue with me. We then walked up to catch the Tractor and trailer back up the hill to the Car Park.I have a couple of slightly negative thoughts about this Summer Lunch. Firstly, I am not particularly happy that Adults pay £55 per person and Children eat FREE. Quite a few families had two and three children per family, and not little ones either, so basically, we were covering the cost of their meal. Then there is the sharing, couples sit opposite each other and the sharing dishes of butter, oils and vegetables etc. are laid out between every two couples. You shouldn’t assume everyone is well mannered enough to ensure they only take their portion. Although everything ran very efficiently, we were disappointed with the attitude and accuracy with billing from the waitress that we had serve us.Many thanks for your extensive review of your experience at our Summer Lunch. I'm sorry to hear of the issues that you had on this visit. We always like to ensure that guests are well fed, so there shouldn't have been any reasons for us not being able to top you up with oil and balsamic and then the side dishes. If you are able to send some more details about the visit to [email protected] then I will look into this with my team, in particular to find out why you had issues with a certain member of staff. I look forward to hearing from you.

This is a truly unique experience. We arrived shortly before 7pm as a foursome. At this point we had no idea what we would be eating other than that it would be 6 courses. We were given a menu that gave a clue as to what the food would be. Told to have an open mind as the food we would be served even if we had historically liked it would be expertly prepared and exquisitely served. It was!We were there for 3 hrs total. Service was attentive and not rushed. The restaurant is small, with limited couverts so it can be a relaxed environment. Conceptually this restaurant works really well.

My husband and I stayed overnight here and dined in their restaurant. Our stay was comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable. Service was attentive, friendly and professional. Extensive menu containing pub classics and vegetarian/vegan choices. They use local produce as much as possible. We were presented with some complimentary tasters before our main. The chef is very talented! Hake and chips with crushed peas and tartare sauce was demolished by my husband. I opted for a roasted veg dish with aubergine and delightful wontons. We were full after our mains but managed to squeeze in Jaffacake icecream !!!! Divine!!!!! Do come and eat here, you won't be disappointed! Our room we stayed in overnight was well equipped and cosy, separate from the inn. Very comfortable bed, bathroom clean, shower and bath in room 1. Outdoor seating available, weather permitting.
