Lovely country pub hotel with amazing food and great service

Reviewed By BankofPapa

Very friendly country pub hotel with great staff who were always cheerful and helpful. It was very busy when we arrived but the staff checked us in quickly. Bedroom 2 was large, comfortable and had a great view of the green. Large, comfy king size bed and a sofa. My only gripe was the en- suite was very small for the size of the room. Breakfast was fantastic but has to be ordered in advance by completing a form the evening before. We also ate there on two nights and the food was excellent, the chef was very accommodating for the vegetarians and vegans in our party and adapted the menu accordingly with no fuss. The triple cooked chips are amazing! I highly recommend this lovely boutique pub hotel.

Old Pound Inn

We are a traditional, friendly village inn, in Aller near Langport, with a good reputation for fine food, real ales and genuine hospitality. Formerly known as the White Lion Public House, we were re-named The Old Pound Inn in 1980, as the Inn stands on the ground of the old village animal pound. A selection of West Country beers is pulled from the sprung stillage in the cellar of this large 16th-century village pub. An open Dutch fire is a feature in the centre of the bar. There is a restaurant, lounge and snug. Excellent food is served, including a Sunday roast, in the bar or restaurant. Dogs are welcome in the bar at this traditional village inn, please keep them on a lead.

Stopped off on our way back home after a holiday in Minehead. The landlady was friendly, the food good and a nice little garden at the back made the whole experience really comfortable. That was our second visit and we would visit again in a heartbeat! Many thanks.

A great and welcoming stay

We stayed at the hotel to use as a base whilst attending a family wedding locally. The room was beautiful, very clean and plenty of space. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. Although booking in is usually in the afternoon, our room was ready for 11.00 am which meant we could sort ourselves out before attending the wedding.

Ugh :(

Mmmm . . . Arriving at Langport Arms Hotel I was lucky to find one of five and a half parking spaces available. The signs directed me to the 'Hotel Entrance' which could've been mistaken for a tradesman's entrance due to being on the side road and which appeared to be a doubler metal security door. Having found the check-in hatch inside a reasonably friendly lady did the honours and showed me to Room 4. This room is facing the main road which is constantly busy, the room having no sound-proofing on the characterful old sash windows. Perhaps the Grade II listing prevents them from being modernised? The room had the structural features that reflect its age (1500's) - I loved them! They had sloping floors and bulging walls which didn't bother me at all and which complemented the character of the building:). However, when gently pushing the walls the windows rattled a little! The central heating didn't seem to work and the radiator control knob was broken. The ensuite bathroom was roomy but an electric shower would've improved things. The shower curtain was adequate. The shaving light at the sink could've been a little brighter. The shower's water flow was not fit for purpose so I had a bath instead - watch out for the very hot water! :). The bed seemed comfy and I had a reasonable night's sleep. After investigation (due to rocking) I discovered that the legs were decidedly wonky - glad I hadn't been amorous with a lady friend!! The furniture was adequate but I could not stop the wardrobe door from opening as it seemed a little uncared for. I had a kettle, milk, tea, sugar, and coffee sachets in the room. The decoration seemed a little DIY due to poorly applied wallpaper (peeling at edges, and poorly lined up in corners). Some electrical sockets appeared to have been added as an after-thought. I had a modern TV which switched itself on and off at will. I discovered afterwards that the place is haunted which didn't bother me at all but explained the strange goings-on! I felt no animosity and so the spirits were probably of the mischievous and naughty kind :). Cleanliness seemed good but could've been a tad more attentive. The fitting out of the hotel seemed to reflect several eras and perhaps it would've been best to stick to just one or two eras. The 'Hotel Directory' folder in my room needed to be replaced due to unstuck edges and generally a worn appearance. The following morning greeted me with a cooked breakfast, :(. The best I can say about this is that it was hardly adequate. It tried to be a full English breakfast but, sadly nearly everything on the plate was tough and required a lot of chewing (especially the king-sized sausages). It was tasty but awkward to digest. Cereal was available too with orange juice. Such an old building needs several thousands of £'s spent on it each year but the owners probably don't have the funds. My guess is that should one million £'s be spent on it, it could be a very sought-after 5* place to stay considering that I found only one other hotel/B&B) in Langport. Food. Oh dear. The hotel's 'Directory' promised a carvery, and restaurant meals - these didn't happen. No sign of a carvery being prepared, and the dinner tables had not been prepared for the restaurant service as promised - no communication of this to guests. Over the two nights I spent there I was reduced to a Mc Donalds, and the local (but good) fish and chip shop to bring back and eat in my room. The hotel staff were quite friendly but (I assume) the owner didn't seem to care much for customers in favour of simply getting the job done, although when questioned he was obliging. So, in summary, I haven't seen any 'stars' or other quality gradings. £70 a night for a double room I think is a little over-priced at this hotel despite the free extra of a resident spirit! Would I stay there again? - no I wouldn't, BUT I am rather particular in the quality of my room and of my service so perhaps I am being a little over critical. I hope that this feedback is helpful to the hotel and to prospective customers

Withy Cottages

Dating from the early 1800's these blue lias stone cottages would have originally been thatched. The small lane running in front was the main thoroughfare linking Pibsbury to Langport via Huish Episcopi. After the "new" road was laid the cottages were extended forwards providing two extra very small dwellings then later being combined with the cottages behind, forming the two that are now Withy Cottages. The stream running in front rises in High Ham and joins the River Yeo in a field or so behind the gardens before that joins the River Parrett, it is believed Withies were washed in the stream and dried in the back gardens before being made in to withy products. Huish Episcopi and Langport are situated at the heart of the beautiful Somerset Levels mid way between the county town of Taunton and Yeovil. The ancient beauty and diverse wildlife of the area makes it one of the landscapes that has inspired many artists and photographers as well as drawing visitors from all over the world. The ancient Muchelney Abbey is less than 2 miles from Huish Episcopi and Glastonbury Tor is only 12 miles away.

Stunning accommodation run by fabulous hosts

Found this gem of a place by sheer accident and so happy we did. Beautiful location, stunning converted barn (the paddock), with horses, chickens, cats obviously not in the barn!! If we could move in, it would have been perfect. Elaine was a great host and provided milk, tea bags, orange juice, eggs and cereal as forgot to get supplies in on a late afternoon arrival. And gave us a firestarter box with logs and accessories for log burner. Had such a great stay, even got up extra early to enjoy the barn and gardens for breakfast alfresco. Will definitely be back

Excellent B&B

We stayed for just the one night but would have been very happy to have a longer stay. The Parsonage is a lovely old house and everything is spotlessly clean. We received a very warm welcome and were very comfortable. Breakfast was superb - fresh fruit, cereals and a great cooked breakfast made to order, best way to start the day! We didn't have time to enjoy the garden but we could see that it is a lovely peaceful spot and would be a great place to relax. Will look forward to staying here again.

Renting in Langport

Reviewed By 123PED

We stayed in the Lodge for 6 months whilst looking to relocate to Somerset. We were the first couple to rent the whole property. We enjoyed our stay and the comfort of the lodge with new kitchen, lovely showers and clean and comfortable furnishings. Great location to town and amenities even though we spent most of our stay in and out of lockdown. However our was marred by the landlady’s frequent demands and requests throughout the stay. We anticipated further problems on our departure and sure enough she was not happy with our standard of cleaning the lodge. We took a week to do this and our photos and successful result at arbitration resulted finally in us gaining out full deposit back.

Amazed by our stay

Reviewed By O6079QWstephenp

Booked 2 of the cottages for a family gather and wow we where we delighted with what we got for our money. You definitely get what you pay for. Central location, very clean and the cottages where fill with everything we needed during our stay. We stayed during the winter and the under-floor heating was a blessing and kept us cosy and warm. The host even supplied us with some fresh milk, so when we arrived, we were able to get a fresh cup of tea without the hassle of having to go to the shop, which I add is only 2 minutes down the road. 5* cant wait to book again for the summer.
