The earliest buildings of this famous Catholic landmark were constructed in the 17th century.
Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre is located 19 km east of Quebec and should be one of the sites that you visit while in the area. We were staying in the Econo Lodge Montmorency Falls in Boischatel, just to the west. An excellent location, by the way, for the easy access it gave us to the area's attractions. Basilica of Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre is one of only eight National Shrines in Canada. The Basilica hosts over 1/2 million visitors/pilgrims who come, some like us, to admire its magnificence, worship and others, to experience it's healing properties. The site was originally a shrine dedicated to Sainte Anne. In 1658, a settler, Etienne de Lessard, donated 2 acres to the church so that a chapel could be built. It was during its construction that Louis Guimond, one of the workers was "miraculously cured" of his rheumatism. This miracle and consequently others that followed have led to the popularity of this site and to the expansion of the chapel to the present day facility. The present day building was built in 1926 and replaced the previous basilica which was originally from 1876 and burnt down in 1922. This church reminded me of grandiose churches that we have visited in Europe. A beautiful church, nestled in lush, green countryside and surrounded by picturesque gardens. It is really a worthwhile visit, whether to just admire or as in the case of many, to reflect and to worship!
