Museu do Quartzo

Hidden away in an abandoned quarry this place was a real surprise. I think we surprised them too - they seemed to be caught out by actual visitors turning up. As with much of this part of Portugal, very few staff spoke English but that didn't stop them making us feel very welcome as they looked after us, the only visitors that afternoon. All the information boards are in Portugese only but they have a supply of booklets with the English which kept the family (including a teenager doing GCSE geology) informed while I got to practice my pidgin Portugese. So much more than I was expecting. Neat, clean, well laid out and very interesting.

It's a short walk from the old city, in a converted bishops palace, and it's a great place to learn about and try a variety of wines from the region. They also help to organise visits if you are interested in the going to one of the many vineyards nearby, and they do everything efficiently and in a calm and friendly way. We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours chatting and tasting, and for some tiny amount of money we got to benefit of their knowledge and expertise, and the delightful surroundings of the building. If you are in Dão and want a perfect introduction to the local wines, this must be your first port of call.
