Elvas (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈɛɫvɐʃ]) is a Portuguese municipality, former episcopal city and frontier fortress of easternmost central Portugal, located in the district of Portalegre in Alentejo. It is situated about 200 kilometres (120 mi) east of Lisbon, and about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) west of the Spanish fortress of Badajoz, by the Madrid-Badajoz-Lisbon railway. The municipality population as of 2011 was 23,078, in an area of 631.29 square kilometres (243.74 sq mi). The city itself had a population of 16,640 as of 2011.

a very interesting inner architecture, it is an hexagonal interior and all the interior walls covered with beautiful colorful tiles, it is next to the Pelourinho and the entrance is free so go in and add another highlight to the visit to Elvas.

Also need to visit is the “Military Museum” located in the “Quartel do Casarão”». The name of the barracks was placed in memory of a large building that Cosmander, a Dutch Jesuit, had demolished in the 17th century. In the museum you can find all kind of things related and used by the military of Portugal. Those things are placed as well on the inside and on the outside. It will take some time to visit the complete museum, but it is worth every step. Certainly for people who love the military stuff.
