9 hotels in Wells: Best hotel deals for 2023

August 6, 2022 Alida England

The name Wells comes from the city's three wells dedicated to St. Andrew. Now there's a fun factoid to fill up your next awkward silence. In England's smallest city, you won't find the big summer crowds of nearby Glastonbury. Instead, you'll have more than enough room to sight-see as you please. And there are plenty of youth clubs to entertain the kiddies while you wander. The cathedral in Wells is the landmark attraction, but also check out the nearby Bristol Zoo Gardens and International Helicopter Museum.

Good Hearty experience

Reviewed By Subir S

I visited Premier Inn Wells on a long Bank Holiday trip with my family to Longleat Safari Park and Cheddar Gorge. I stayed for 3 night which was strategically located somewhere between these two locations. The following are my review: PROS: 1. Good friendly staff helping us during our stay. 2. Large Clean room 3. Good Proximity to Morrisions and Lidl. 3. Good hearty English breakfast everyday. Obviously you need to buy it. Free for child below 15 years of age. CONS: 1. Parking is not free. We need to pay £4 for the whole day despite being in the private parking area. 2. No Microwave oven in the room nor in the lobby. So if you bring frozen food from Morrisons, you cannot heat it up. Overall we were quite happy with the experience. I would certainly recommend this hotel for anybody who wants to visit Longleat and Cheddar Gorge.

Poor, shabby and a throw back to 1980’s Britain

Reviewed By Stefan M

There is shabby chic. This hotel was shabby and far from chic. We arrived and were told there was no parking available. The receptionist was unaware of alternatives other than a Public car park 10 minutes walk away. We returned and spent the night, where around 4:30 a.m we were awakened not by the noise from the market or the cathedral bells (for which we were offered ear plugs), but by fellow residents talking as they too were wide awake; the paper thin curtains permitting the summer light to cascade in and it was difficult to sleep. No complaints about the poor soundproofing as this is a very old building, but wafer thin curtains must have been mentioned before. Down to breakfast which was poor. I should have sent my breakfast back, but with our car park ticket running out, we couldn’t wait a further twenty minutes. The single rasher of bacon was way past crisp and was heavily burned, unlike the toast which had a light tan! At checkout, we had the opportunity to complain, but we didn’t as I don’t think it would have had any impact. We did raise the issue of the curtains and the shabbiness of the room to be told “we are going to refurbish”. The bar for post dinner drinks was dirty and the barmaid was completely unaware of the need to wash measures after dispensing drinks. To be honest, the bar staff were poor and seemed more intent on having fun than customer service. Was there anything good? Our room grubby and worn with the window sills caked with dust. Linen and towels on and bathroom ok. The staff at breakfast were pleasant, and the hotel had a nice cat. Would I stay here again? No. You pay in Wells for the location but at half the £140.00 we paid, I would look elsewhere. One to avoid.

A lovely location, excellent food and superb staff

Reviewed By TOLLER_DAVE

We spent three nights at The Ancient Gatehouse and enjoyed a thoroughly relaxing stay there. On arrival we were greeted in a very friendly manner - almost like old friends. We were able to park along Cathedral Green (just a few metres from the hotel) making it very easy for the luggage. The famous room 9 is located at the top of a twisty 14c spiral staircase and not suitable for frail or elderly residents - however, the room was very cosy and the adjoining bathroom had a superb shower with plenty of hot water. The breakfasts were excellent (cooked by a lovely Irish lady) and kept us going all day. We ate in the busy hotel Italian Restaurant each night and tried a number of pasta dishes and steak (which the chef specially cooked in a pizzaiola sauce for us) - all of our meals were excellent. The staff were exceptional - even though they were busy, they weren't too busy to stop and have a quick chat. You could sense that they all worked well as a team and actually described themselves to us as "one big family". We shall definitely be visiting again!

We knew that breakfast wasn't available with our booking but we didn't realise that this was due to a shortage of staff so they had no evening meals available either. When we asked for an alternative suggestion takeaways seemed to be the only option. This was thankfully only a one night stopover otherwise I think we would have tried to move hotels. Not impressed with the back entrance which lead to an outdoor winding iron staircase to our room. We didn't actually get to see the hotel itself. We often book a room in Wells en-route to Cornwall but this one will be crossed off our list.

Mendip View Luxury Lodges

Highly recommend

Reviewed By franki99

We stayed in the platinum lodge , no 1 with our 4 grandchildren , two aged 5 and two aged 10 and we very impressed with the lodge and the resort . All the staff especially reception where warm and welcoming , we did not eat in the restaurant so cannot comment on the food or bar . The lodge was spotlessly clean and the beds comfortable, and was well equipped and spacious and warm . We thought they had done well with the decking area , beautiful views from wherever we sat and the kids loved being able to splash about in the hot tub . It doesn’t have the amount of jets that we have on ours at home but I think they have got it right as the noise would be dreadful if they all had over 24 jets in . The hot tub was cleaned every morning . As we booked directly with the resort we received free entry to Wookey Hole which was a bonus as for a family of six it would of cost us £106 entry. The resort is impeccable maintained and parking easy outside the lodge . Longleat , Chedder etc all only a short drive. Just to compare a few weeks ago we stayed (‘just the two of us ) in a four star hotel in Norwich in their best suite and I can honestly say that the lodge was better value for money , far more comfortable and cleaner , staff really friendly and helpful . If your looking a a week in Benidorm this isn’t it
