9 Historic Sites in Gion That You Shouldn't Miss

August 11, 2021 Rebbecca Marino

The shrines and temples of Kyoto offer a rare link between modern life in the city and its very ancient past. The Shimogamo Shrine dates to the 6th century and seems suspended in time, its serenity and spiritual power still palpable. Visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, then see the life-sized Thousand Armed Kannon statues of Sanjūsangen-dō. Enjoy traditional geisha performances, then savor a tranquil meal at a restaurant overlooking the Kamo River.

Yasaka Shrine

Yasaka Shrine must be part of any tour of the temple and shrine jewels of Higashi-Yama. It brings with it 1350 years of Japanese History. It couples nicely with a stroll through nearby Maruyama Park and its idyllic teahouse over the pond or coming from the Gion area.

Tatsumi Daimyojin Shrine

Reviewed By Rogyrl - Victoria Capital Regional District, Canada

Enjoyed this bit of tranquility amidst the busy tourist filled streets. love the fact that this Shinto Shrine is specifically to support and protect the entertainment and geisha district. Watch out for the speeding taxi cabs who seemed very inpatient and rather un-japanese. guess the volume of tourists got to them.
