March 13, 2018 Emerita Lamoureux

Wairoa is a town and territorial authority district in New Zealand's North Island. The town is the northernmost in the Hawke's Bay region, and is located on the northern shore of Hawke Bay at the mouth of the Wairoa River and to the west of Mahia Peninsula. It is 118 kilometres northeast of Napier, and 92 kilometres southwest of Gisborne. It is the largest town in the district of Wairoa. The district has been known historically as 'Te Wairoa'. In keeping with the district's vision of being bilingual by 2040, the use of the phrase 'Te Wairoa' when referring to the district is steadily increasing.

We had an awesome experience trekking for four days. The scenery was amazing. Tracks well maintained. Huts were what you would expect. We started off from Onepoto to the Panekire Hut. I found it good to start here as it got the really difficult part over and done with while you were fresh plus we spent our last night in luxury at the Waiharuru hut. We took the water taxi back which was a great way to see how far we had come and a good finish to the trek. Loved every part of the adventure. Definitely park your car in a safe place. Some people didn't and had got broken into. We parked our vehicles at Blackbush. They shuttled us to The starting point, looked after our vehicles, water taxied us back and shuttled us back to the cars. The road was very windy and we needed to stop a few times. But well worth it. Fitness levels of the group were all different, but you definitely need a certain level of fitness if you are doing it unguided. We were in a big group so we needed to.make sure we booked our huts. Definitely recommend it.

If you're into caves, great scenery and a dirt road. This is the place for you. 40 km from Wairoa, 6 km up the narrow, winding and unsealed Mangaone Valley Road. Turn off SH 2, approximately 4 km north of Nuhaka or 5 km south of Morere Springs. Wairoa.
About a 30 minute walk to the caves one way, it is a nice cave to get into. With steps descending in, it isn't too hard to do. Bring booties if you're afraid of getting muddy shoes. The walk to the cave isn't easy as its a steep climb up a hill, with poo all over the place.
Do it as a little stopover when driving from Gisborne to Lake Waikaremoana.

In 1928, the Gaiety Theatre opened as Wairoa's first cinema. In 2015 it was reborn with the latest digital projection equipment, and the world's most advanced theatre sound system. Hearing is believing! Watching a thriller/action movie in the Gaiety Theatre is unlike any other cinema-going experience ..... Generally open Wednesdays through Sundays (and 7 days during school holidays) - this theatre is located adjacent to the fabled East End Cafe - home of great food .... Treat yourself and loved ones to a visit.

Whakamahia Beach and the Whakamahi wetland at the mouth of the Wairoa River are well worth a visit. From the look-out at pilot Hill a road takes you past WW2 gun emplacements and round the wetland to the beach. With a swell running the beach is not safe for swimming but there are great fishing opportunities, beach walking and bird watching in the newly restored wetland.

I was surprised how reasonable their prices were for their plants and pots. We bought a beautiful orchid, a bromeliad and several pots. They also had a lot of lovely home decor items that would make great gifts. It's a hidden gem in the downtown area of Wairoa.

Long River Gallery

I stopped off in Wairoa after travelling on the road. I walked past the gallery and I wasn't going to walk in but my husband wanted to have a look around. My eye went to a mixed media piece called 'Rear View' the artist being a female called Franzi Corker. I love to collect affordable art, and I just adore this piece.
I highly recommend this gallery to others who like to collect affordable art.

Coast Park Gardens

Just on the outskirts of the picturesque riverside township of Wairoa lies this 2.5 hectare country garden and orchard - framed by a beautiful backdrop of large deciduous trees. This hedge-enclosed garden features garden rooms of topiary, roses, perennials, willow art, pottery and a kai (edible) garden - this garden has been created from bare ground with loving care and transports you to another world as you wander through a sea of blooms and scents. Keith and Kaye also sell some plants, including fantastic lemon grass plants - so if you are a chef with a need for great lemon grass - this is the place to visit!
