Parque Nacional Monte Leon

Reviewed By AHA2006 - New York City, United States

We were trying to visit Monte Leon NP from Nov 27 to 29, 2017 but the park was closed. Reason given by the ranger was that the road was being repaired from the heavy rain in March. We were also told that it would open on Dec 1. We saw workers driving in and out of the park. We stayed at the estancia Doraike just across the park, and our host suggested us to go to the southern part of Puerto Santa Cruz called Punta Quilla. It is a 40 min walk from the parking area once registered at the entrance which seems to be a control point for the oil company (Total) there. We saw a good amount of penguins there especially a lot of them were hiding under the scrubs nursing their babies. It was amazing to see up close the penguins mothers and babies but of course with respect. We only saw 2 other pairs of tourists that day and some locals fishing at the beach. This could be an alternative if the ML NP is still closed.
