Mai Chau is truly beautiful, but unfortunately me, my mother and sister went when there was a typhoon. It was the worst typhoon all year, all the roads where closed so we could not go anywhere..... not much to do :(
But then we meet Andrea from Asia out doors, Asia out doors normally run the yoga in this big beautiful cave witch would be AMAZING but because of this typhoon we couldn't. So Andrea came to our resort and ran a private yoga class for us. We all had so much fun doing it and Andrea was very informative and helpful to us all, I recommend it to all ages as I am 26 my sister 36 and Mum 62. We even did acro yoga witch is something I absolutely loved.
As I said we couldn't do the cave yoga but I did get to see inside the cave and I know it would be amazing to do it in there, hopefully I get to go back one day. Again thanks Andrea for a great day :)

A little unusual to find something like Ban Lac village in rural Vietnam- it is almost deliberately established for tourism and that includes for the residents of Hanoi who themselves make the 5 hour road trip to this tiny rural idyll
Ideally nestled amongst the stunning mountain ranges of Mai Chau district, it;s an ideal base for visitors. and trekkers and those touring Vietnam by bike. You can rest up with the locals in "home stays" although don;t kid yourself that these are not slightly "commercial" as opposed to rural (if you want real and rural there are plenty on the doorstep but you'll soon be back in Ban Lac for a little less basic "comfort")
Let's face it-- you're here for the stunning scenery and to experience something the "industrialised" world has forgotten-- and when you've cycled through the working fields and retaken your breath fro many number of walking tours, you'll forget the fact that in Vietnamese terms Ban Lac has a tiny bit of commerciality to it-- in fact you'll possibly even welcome it- for sure you'll want to retunr

Mai Chau Tourism - Day Tours

Reviewed By SUE D - Adelaide, Australia

We booked a day trip to Mai Chau Valley (Mai Chau Nature Place) through our Hanoi hotel. It was my favourite day in Vietnam. We were picked up early and taken by bus ( a bit cramped because it is obviously not built for Westerners) and had a 3.5 hour ride to this very beautiful area. We had a comfort stop where we were able to see a variety of local wines such as snake wine. Another stop was at a high point to take photos of the valley below and we had fun with some of the local Mung people. It was raining quite a bit so there was a lot of mist and low cloud which added to the beauty of the area. We had a delicious lunch near the bungalow area before people headed off on bikes for a trip through the valley. Thankfully the rain had cleared by this stage. My husband and I chose to walk instead and were provided with a local guide. We did a 5 km walk through stunning scenery, saw the White Thai women weaving on their looms, walked through the series of small villages and visited the market. It was fantastic. It was very hot and humid at times but the beauty of the valley made our relative discomfort seem unimportant. It was a very full day, we got back to our hotel exhausted but it was very well worth the visit.

Thung Khe Pass

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

Travelling in a bus the 135 km from Hanoi to Mai Chau, in Hoa Binh Province, our driver pulled over to the right hand side of the road about 25 km short of our destination.
It was Thung Khe Pass on Vietnam Highway 6, a twisting, winding road that often runs dangerously close to the 1,000 m drop to the valley below. Sensational!
Perched precariously on the edge of the cliff 1,000 m above the valley below, are stalls selling snacks, drinks, local herbs and spices, and a range of local forest orchids.
We sat on a bamboo mat in one of the stalls and ate a local speciality, sticky rice cooked in a bamboo stick and served with a salty herbed dip.
Far below us was a patchwork of rice padi, streams, small villages and patches of bamboo Forests.
And across the valley floor, another mountain range rose to an equal height to where we were sitting.
It was only a 20 minute break on our four hour journey to our eventual destination, but was most memorable.

Chieu Cave

Reviewed By David B - Rayong, Thailand

I had read about the 1,200 stone steps carved into the mountainside to reach Chieu Cave. Undeterred I got up at 5 a.m. to start the climb in time for sunrise at the summit.
I was hardly worth the effort, although it did give me a very strenuous physical workout.
The cave itself is unimpressive - more a cavern in the mountain top than a true cave, and the stalagmites and stalactites have none of the sparkle of other caves I have visited, being a drab grey colour.
As for the sunrise, the cave faces west and the sun was coming up from behind the mountain to the east and did not actually appear until about 9 o'clock, by which time I was back down on the valley floor.
If you are undeterred by my review and intend to tackle the climb yourself, be careful. Many of the steps are crumbling and in a sad state of disrepair.
