The Haunted Magnolia Hotel

The Magnolia Hotel began as a 2 room log cabin and Indian Raids shelter built by the city's Co-founder and original Texas Ranger, James Campbell in 1840. After being killed by Comanche warriors, the cabin was sold and became Seguin's first and oldest running stagecoach stop (1847-1875). The shelter/basement was then used as Seguin's first (and worst) jail for years. To house passengers off the stagecoach, a three room limecrete inn was built in the back. This is where the famous Texas Ranger John "Jack" Coffee Hays met and married his sweetheart, Susan Calvert, In 1850 the wood framed building was added as a 10 room hotel, saloon and restaurant. This hotel has had notable people stay such as Governor Ireland and President Ulysses Grant just to name a few. It is believed even the notorious Bonnie and Clyde slept here. By the late 1990's it had fallen in disrepair and listed on the 2012 "Top Ten Most Endangered Places in Texas". It has been restored and is now a Bed and Breakfast.

The tour took an hour and it was well worth it if you enjoy historical houses. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and the early use of concrete along with using the roof to store water was fascinating. Not recommended for those with small children who will be easily bored by the tour. It also has steps is some areas which may be problematic if mobility is an issue. But if you like history and architecture, this is a hidden gem! I often go on historical house tours and have never seen anything like this. Enjoy!

This was a fun place to visit, try a few beers and have some good pizza. We especially liked the hazelnut coffee blend and the honey pecan beers. The other beers were pretty good too. A very friendly, helpful staff. Recommend.
