SHA-RAKU Archery Experience

Just a three-minute walk from the Atomic Bomb Dome. Kyudo is a Japanese martial art based on shooting an arrow from a Japanese bow to a target to reach a complete focus of mind and body. The main difference of kyudo and western archery is that, in kyudo, every movement follows a traditional routine that pays respect to the equipment and to the opponent. I'll give a brief explanation about the art of kyudo as well as instructions and demonstrations. With the knowledge you'll gain, you will learn to shoot arrows at the target. You'll also understand the fun and challenging aspect of the sport, particularly while wearing the traditional hakama and armor. Usually in kyudo, you are not allowed to pull the arrow unless you master the basics. But during our lesson, you will be able to enjoy the real kyudo experience even as a complete beginner. It will be a great time if you are looking for a nice photo or movie to show to your friends.

The gondola is still not working (should be back working tomorrow), so we walked up. The posted sign said 90 minutes, but this 62 year old in good shape make it in one hour. The hike is 98% stairs, so no strollers! Bring water if you hike, though you can buy drinks at a machine by the buildings just below the top. The Lookout on top does close at 4pm, so make sure to arrive earlier since you will miss the best views if you can’t go up the Lookout.

We booked our bicycles one month in advance online and had no problems securing a reservation (this was in late November). We got decent new cross city bikes. Please check your bikes as some of the bikes can have problems with gears, seat adjustment etc. The staff at the Onomichi bike rental shop was helpful but did not speak much english. We were given some instructions to read and filled up some forms before we were off with our bikes. The bikes come with bicycle locks. Helmet rental is at a separate charge and is optional. For hassle free cycling, we arranged for our hotel in Onomichi to forward our main luggage to our hotel in Matsuyama the next day using a 3rd party Takkyubin service provider. We carried a small day pack for our 1 overnight stay in Omishima. Please note that same day luggage delivery is possible only for selected accommodations within the cycling route. Our itinerary was as follows First day we visited Onomichi->Mukoujima->Innoshima->Ikuchijima (visit Kosanji temple museum)-> Omishima (overnight) On the second day Visit Oyamamizumi shrine, ryokan dropped us off at Sakari Port for ferry ride to bunny island with bikes-> return to Omishima-> Hakata -> Oshima-> Imabari. The route is easy to follow (just look for the blue lines) and the elevations are carefully managed. The ride is not technical at all but some physical conditioning is advised as the route is long (we clocked around 96km mileage with some other small detours or stops). For those who are not entirely comfortable cycling on the roads (especially when there is heavy traffic), there are additional paths parallel to the official cycling route in large stretches on which you can also cycle. In terms of scenery, there is a mix of coastal views, soft industry and citrus orchards. There are restrooms, convenience stores, cafes/restaurants and/or rest stops interspersed along the route. I felt that 2 days was just about right for the trip. Any less and you will probably not be able to do any meaningful sightseeing.

Sandankyo was the highlight of our trip to Hiroshima, and I highly recommend everyone to at least walk the lower gorge up to the noodle house (1.5km one way). The scenery is to die for, and the route is manageable for most. If you are fitter, keep going up the gorge, and target to catch the shuttle bus that leaves from the mid-level carpark back to Sandankyo at 2pm. Most people should be able to cover the lower gorge, nidandaki and sandandaki before 2pm. The 2pm shuttle should take you back into town in time for a quick lunch and to catch the 3:00 or 3:30 express bus back to Hiroshima.

MAZDA Zoom-Zoom Stadium Hiroshima

We enjoyed everything about our visit to the stadium. The local team, Hiroshima Carp, were playing the Tokyo Swallows. The actual baseball was very good, but for us secondary to everything going on around us. The Japanese people are generally reserved in public, but at the stadium they let loose! There was singing and chanting and noise makers banging all night. Nothing was over the top; all was in good fun. They have a really cool seventh inning stretch routine which you need to experience. The whole thing was a blast! If you have a chance to see a game here go for it! Tickets are very hard to get, at least for resrved seats, so try to get them in advance. We used the online ticket service Viagogo and got great seats for not too much money.
