8 Nature & Parks in Ulaanbaatar That You Shouldn't Miss

February 4, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

Located in the northern part of the country, high above sea level, Ulan Bator is the coldest capital city in the world. The cultural and business center of Mongolia, and a hub connecting the Trans-Siberian Railway with the Chinese rail system, Ulan Bator has become a thriving urban center in one of the most remote locations in the world. Visit the Tibetan-style Gandan Monastery, one of the few buildings in Ulan Bator to predate WWII and one of the few monasteries to survive the Soviet purge.

Hustai National Park

Reviewed By Kai_Wah - Malaysia, null

This national park is a protected area for the Przewalski’s horses that face the threat of extinction. It is approximately 2-3 hours (subject to traffic conditions) drive from Ulaanbaatar city. We reached here in the evening and the weather was cool with fresh air. We spotted many of the wild horses walking around the hillsides. Przewalski’s horses are really very beautiful animals with light brown colour on the flank and yellowish-white on the belly, muzzle and near the horseshoes. We also were able to see some wild deers silhouettes on top of the hill. The sunset at the hillside was mesmerising too! It was a fascinating and unforgettable time! A must especially for animal and nature lovers!

Our group of 18 paxs from Thailand spent our vacation to Mongolia on July 15-20 with Professor Woraphat organized by Sukniyom Travel. After visiting to Khustain Nuruu National Park for watching Takhi(Przewalski's horse:the last species of the wild horse), we went to Gorkhi - Terelj National Park which is a wonderful nature destination. There are beautiful rock formations, one so called "the turtle rock". We spent a night in Ger @ Dream Terelj Lodge .The Ger is so nice & comfortable(with 5 stars bathroom inside, all facilities and foods were so good. All so the resort staffs were friendly and helpful.

Bogd Khan Uul National Park

Reviewed By hmoy24677 - Doha, Qatar

Beautiful national park with endless hiking trails. It has a creek that runs in the middle that freezes during fall and winter. The entrance of the park has a big parking space and a restaurant (which I never visited since I'm not much into Mongolian food). One downside that there are no toilet facilities for the big demand it has during weekends. Another downside the abandoned structures that remain from an old hotel, these should just be torn down. I don't value this park for its attractions but rather for the hiking trails and the views, which are lovely.
