8 Gear Rentals in Rarotonga That You Shouldn't Miss

December 25, 2021 Jana Sager

Sipping coconut milk while bargaining for handmade jewelry and swaying your hips to live music—just another Saturday morning in Rarotonga. After a few hours of checking out the wharf-side Punanga Nui Market, hit the beaches of this reef-protected volcanic island. There are plenty of picturesque lagoons that allow peaceful swimming or snorkeling, and moonlit strolls along the East Side sands are pure magic. Raro Safari Tours are a popular way to explore the island’s vivid rainforest.

All you need on the island is a bike – it'll get you everywhere. We hired bikes from here for our last two day on the island and it was a great call. We cycled all the way around the island (32km), went into the hills a bit, visited beaches and restaurants, etc. Bikes came in good condition. Ask for a basket to be put on your bike if you have something to carry – they do have baskets available and will install one for you quickly at no extra charge. $2/day insurance/roadside assistance is a good call if you want peace of mind.

2nd time using Rarocars. The airport pick-up arrangement is perfect when you're arriving at odd hours of the day or night. The staff couldn't be more helpful or accommodating. We have hired a mini van both times and while it wasn't the newest vehicle it was fully function and perfect for zipping around with a bigger group.

Polynesian Bike Hire

We hired from the Muri Beach location. After we visited all the other car/bike hire places, this one was the best value and had the lowest excess. It was $500, whereas the other companies were $1,000 -$2,000 excess. They tell you 'it is standard' but it is not, as you can see all the prices varied. We hired a scooter for 2 days. Cost about $50. We had to put a $50 security deposit, which was nothing. It was comfortable enough for two of us, barely used any fuel, went around the whole island 3 times and then other little trips. When we had to fill it up to return the bike, it was $10 for the fuel. Quickly served and was an easy process. Did help that my husband has a motorbike licence. Returning the scooter was very easy and quick. Would suggest hiring with this company in the first instance.

Island Car & Bike Hire

We hired from Island Cars three times now and would not use anyone else. We have in the past hired from both Avis and Polynesian car hire but now just use Island. The cars have always been clean and tidy. We always just hire a compact car and theres always plenty of room for our cases etc. We usually collect and drop off at the airport and the staff are always polite and super easy to deal with. Overall we have found Island to be the best value

My wife and I rented a bike from Brendan during our 6 week honeymoon in Rarotonga. The bike was in great condition and was rented at a very affordable rate. If you're new to the scooter, Brendan will take you out on a little intro drive to show you how to handle it. He will also help you become familiar with the local driving conventions before taking your test at the police station. We had no mechanical issues with the bike the whole time, but Brendan is on call to help if anything should go wrong. Thanks again to Brendan and Kimmy at BT Rentals!
