Jim Jim Falls

Spectacular all year - see this area from the ground in the dry season, and from the air in the wet season. The Jim Jim Area is only accessible by 4WD during the dry season. Visitors can explore the spectacular and challenging walks or take a boat shuttle ride to Twin Falls over crystal clear waters (charges apply). Scenic flights are also very popular, and allow visitors to see the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, which are in full flow only during the wet season

This was worth the trek over large rocks and boulders. The kids in our group are 9 and 12, capable of climbing and jumping and had fun. When we reached the end it was spectacular and half our group entered the freezing water!! Water was clear and inviting after the trek and cooled our feet. We would love to see this in the wet season! There was only a small tickle of water coming down from the top.

If you're visiting friends or family in Darwin get them to take you here for a picnic, or cook up a BBQ.... it has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and is a safe place for the kids to swim, the Cool Spot Cafe is close by if you wanted to have a coffee or meal, and the views are just lovely...a great spot if you own a canoe or kayak..loads of fun to be had.

Mataranka Thermal Pool and Rainbow Springs

Mataranka Thermal Pool can be reach by a 500 m loop walk, 20 minutes, easy walking. Meanders among towering Livistonas to the Thermal Pool providing swimming access.

Mataranka is always our favorite destination when we travel with our 4WD to Northern Territory. Together with me wife and daughter we simply love the lazy atmosphere in Mataranka Homestead. You can feel a real outback when you stay there longer especially at evenings when you enjoy a meal at Maluka Bar. The caravan park is mostly dirt so if someone does not like it, they can stay in Bitter Springs Caravan Park as they have hot springs too. The good thing about Mataranka Homestead is that it is only 100 m walk to the thermal pools, and the water is crystal clear, transparent, smells nice and is 33 degrees. It is paradise. Most of the evenings birds, peacocks and wallabies approach campers as they are very friendly. It is perfect for kids to have nature encounters. When we were there we always had a campfire on, and my wife cooked something for dinner. Indeed, sometimes, especially closer to wet season bats arrive and they do smell and poop everywhere. However the path and pool area is being cleaned regularly by the homestead staff. Honestly if you like nature and want to go in the ‘zone’ and fully relax, Mataranka is the place to be.
