7 Transportation in Cordoba That You Shouldn't Miss

June 30, 2021 Jasper Kershner

Córdoba was once the premier city of the Western World, the greatest metropolis west of Constantinople, and the seat of Europe’s first university. Today, there’s a modern commercial center, but most travelers love strolling the town’s ancient cobblestone streets, peeking through gates for glimpses of lush flowers and beautiful tiled fountains.

Renfe

We used the Renfe AVE train from Madrid to Cordoba. It took 1 hour & 45 min and was an excellent, efficient service. The trip was comfortable and trouble-free, with no delays. We booked Preferente/first class seats direct through Renfe which cut out the middle-man but they were still reasonably expensive (€57). There are cheaper options but the high-speed trains really cut down the travelling time considerably and we wanted to maximise our time in Cordoba. In hindsight, we should have booked our train tickets much earlier because you can make substantial savings (much like booking an early plane ticket). The best savings are made if you check the website and buy when the tickets are first released. The Preferente seats were certainly very comfortable and spacious however the whole train is very modern and next time, I’d probably book the standard seats for a reasonably short trip like Madrid - Cordoba. We chose our seat number when booking our tickets. Wifi, ear phones, drinks and a meal were included (surprisingly good sandwiches, biscuits, tea/coffee and chocolates). Luggage racks are overhead so you can keep your luggage close by but you will have to be able to lift it up/down yourself. Once at the station, there are big sloped escalators so getting your luggage out is pretty easy. You catch the Renfe AVE train in Madrid from Atocha Station but there is only one station in Cordoba so there is no confusion at that end. Cordoba station is a little way out of the historic centre and a taxi cost €8.
