Melrose Heritage Museum

I have seen a lot of small local museums over the years and the Melrose Museum must be the best. It has been sell set up and we came away feeling that we had learnt a lot. Particularly liked the Federation Building displays. Full marks to the enthusiastic local people who have set it up and who look after it.

Mount Remarkable Summit Hike

Mount Remarkable really is quite a special mountain to interact with and climb upon. Its certainly not an Everest and that probably helps people of all ages, to do as much or as little as you like. I have been visiting Melrose since I was a child and I love climbing it as much today, as I did back when my dad, was with me and supervising my safety. Best done on a mild weather day. Take your time; take plenty of self-hydration and electrolytes; don't forget your camera or go-pro and enjoy a breathtaking experience with great views and considerable physical challenges in parts. See you at the top.

Recently took a trip to Melrose and while there took the opportunity to visit Bartagunyah Estate Wines which is situated about 5km south of Melrose on a dirt road. I had lived in the Barossa Valley for a good part of my life, and I am an avid wine collector of high quality wines. To be honest I did not approach this visit with an open mind, and my expectations were very reserved. I was in for a BIG surprise. The winery produces 3 wines. Available at the moment is the 2018 Cab Sav 2018 Shiraz Plus a 10 year old Shiraz port. I found the cab sav a little sharp at the end, but it was still good quality and well above my expectations. This wine was not decentered, as we tasted from a freshly opened bottle. I would still rate it 91/100 The Shiraz was smooth and very drinkable and finished with a softness rarely experienced with shiraz. Delightful wine indeed. My rating 93/100 My favourite was the Shiraz port. No bite here, just a smooth beautifully flavoured port, and pleasant finish. My rating 93/100 All their wine is comparable with above average Barossa wine and very sensibly priced. There is only one downside. In view of their location they have no Eftpos facility, so it means take cash with you. Well worth a visit and thoroughly recommended. We almost finished a bottle of port that night - it was so good.
