Abbey of Cluny

Founded in 910, Cluny Abbey radiated across Europe throughout the Middle Ages, with its large abbey church of exceptional proportions : "The Maior Eclesia".The highest vaults of the Romanesque world still bear witness today to this gigantism. The remains of the vast restored abbey church and the sites of the 18th century buildings were renovated for the occasion of the 1100th anniversary of the abbey's foundation; they encourage rediscovery of this unique place. A 3D film and virtual reproductions complete the tour and illustrate the majesty of what was Christianity's largest church. Move the screens to discover the abbey just as you would have found it in the 15th century!

I would definitely recommend a visit to Cluny Abbey. I would also recommend that you purchase the audio guides as well. Although nearly all of the huge church was dismantled for building stone after it was sold to builders merchants after the revolution, the visit is excellent in conjuring up the grandeur and majesty of what was the biggest church in Christendom for 400 years. We went on a stonkingly hot day in early July, so we kept out of the sun as much as possible, which meant that we also kept out of the extensive Abbey grounds as much as possible. Even so, our visit lasted more than 2 hours, with plenty left to see and do to make a further visit worthwhile the next time we are in the area. The 3D film show at the beginning of the visit is outstanding.
