Finca Dracula

Spend a day exploring the nature and landscapes of Cerro Punta starting by walking through the lush forested gardens of Finca Dracula, then you will be introduced to the exotic orchids that grow in their collection. After a delicious homemade Panamanian lunch you will explore Cerro Punta, with its beautiful gardens, fresh strawberries and agricultural scenery.

Entry includes a group tour of the orchid collection in Spanish or English. You learn about cultivation and breeding, and of course the famous Dracula orchid bred here. Aftrewards you can spend as long as you like enjoying the extensive tropical garden. There is a cafe on site. Cerro Punta is a very attractive top end of a valley. The steep valley sides are cultivated, for growing vegetables up to the continuous forest cover along the ridges. It is very picturesque. Finca Dracula is a short walk from the bus stop (there is a frequent service from David about an hour away). No problem parking a car. There are beautiful walks up into the hills, and guided bird watching is rewarding and easily arranged. There are a few hotels, private rooms and restaurants in the neighbouring village, and a lovely flower nursery. Well worth a couple of days stay or longer..

Very pretty whimsical garden. There were happy sayings, happy music playing from flower speakers on the walk. The lady who owned the place gave us a tour of her very impressive bonsai garden as well. Very worthwhile to walk around.

Summit Botanical Gardens

Featuring a small zoo and paved trails, this tropical botanical garden features Panama's national bird, the Harpy Eagle.

The park itself was very well maintained even though there are a few sections where the funding obviously isn't enough to take care of it (like the stonebridge and fountain area). The playgrounds must be a big attraction for local families but the place was almost empty when we visited. Access is only possible with advance reservation. Some of the animal enclosures were in dire need of upgrades, others had a facelift already. As foreigners we enjoyed the diversity of the flora. The blooming canon ball trees, flame trees, le flamboyant, guayacan, cocoa and so many more were a absolute highlites of the visit. We also saw quite a few agoutis, one with babies, which were fun to watch.
