7 Equestrian Trails in Northern Portugal That You Shouldn't Miss

August 6, 2021 Phylicia Berquist

Brimming with both history and natural wonder, Northern Portugal is home to Porto, the city that gave the country its name, as well as the important ancient town of Braga. Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.

The sense of freedom you get by ridding a horse, is amazing. When you add an amazing view, near the river, you feel that the world is a wonderfull, peaceful place. Plus, Abrigo D'Aventura has another feature that makes of it amazing because all the animals are rescued and have an amazing history, so you are actually helping Daniel that takes care of all of them with an amazing care and knowledge.

This was a fantastic experience from beginning to end!! I wish I didn't have to leave, because this was truly special. The horses are amazing and very well taken care of. I learned a lot from Carlos and from those smart horses. He has trained each horse of the herd, knows each of them by heart. I had many questions, because I was so impressed at how well the horses carry themselves and respond to slight leg signals. They are smart and well trained for the trails, they do not panic or follow each other without paying attention. On top of this, the landscape is beautiful, the food amazing, and everyone I met was so welcoming, starting with Carlos! I cannot recommend it more, I seriously felt like staying for good :).
