A few people discouraged me from visiting as it was quite far from Chengdu. Good thing I did not listen to them! Plan the visit as a full day outing to Leshan - boat ride, lunch and visit the amazing Oriental Buddha Capital which is adjoining to the Leshan Buddha and you can walk to the entrance where you walk down to be near the Leshan Buddha. The boat ride is well organized- you have to put on life vests which are provided. There are some photographers in the boat who will take photo for you for RMB20 and you collect them (laminated) near the booth where you bought your boat tickets. I think they do a good job of it and is worth RMB20.

Oriental Buddha Capital

Reviewed By deanosaur89 - Edmonton, Canada

This is some sort of Buddha theme park so we were unsure on the authenticity of some items but it was seriously cool to see a 55 m tall Buddha standing inside a cave, 170 m long Buddha carved into the side of a rock hill and many other large scale statues and carvings. The area has quite a bit of history with tombs dating back to when the giant Buddha work began. There are lots of English and Mandarin signs explaining the area's significance as well. We spent a few hours here appreciating the statues, carvings and scenery. Bring good shoes as the mossy sidewalks are very slippery. This area is very close to the Leshan Giant Buddha so if you are making a trip there this area is worth checking out as well complete. It costs 80 RMB to enter this area and is worth it. Do keep in mind there is a side cave filled with sexual depictions near the arhat area of the underground palace so cover your eyes...or don't.
