Qingdao ([tɕʰíŋtàu]; also spelled Tsingtao) is a city in eastern Shandong Province on the east coast of China. It is the largest city in its province. Administered at the sub-provincial level, Qingdao has jurisdiction over six districts and four county-level cities. As of 2014 Qingdao had a population of 9,046,200 with an urban population of 6,188,100. Lying across the Shandong Peninsula and looking out to the Yellow Sea, it borders Yantai to the northeast, Weifang to the west and Rizhao to the southwest.

This is a large, clean, centrally-located beach with golden sand. We were there on an early September weekday and it couldn't have been more perfect! Before 11am it was very busy with over-50s energetically playing ball games and packing out the changing rooms, but it quietened down after that. We rented a set of plastic table, umbrella and 4 chairs for 100RMB for the whole day from one of the small shops under the boardwalk, and took a blanket in case we wanted to lie down (doesn't seem that loungers are available anywhere in Qingdao unfortunately). If you stay at the top of the beach, away from the sea, it's quite peaceful as most of the people are at the shoreline. There are a few restaurants on top of the boardwalk and shops selling swimwear and snacks (pot noodles etc) but we took our own food. Obviously things are different in 2020, but I would say that September is a perfect time to visit the beaches in Qingdao - not too many tourists as the kids are back in school, but the temperatures are still high and most days are sunny. Note: If you take a cab here, there is only one gap in the fence along the road where cabs can stop, so you might have to carry your stuff a ways along the beach before finding a good place to set up. I also can't vouch for the cleanliness of the changing rooms or the sea itself, but I wouldn't personally go into either ;-)

We were pleasantly surprised by this beautiful beach, an easy cab ride from the centre of Qingdao (it's also on the subway). The area is nicely landscaped, there are lifeguards, and there are kiosks selling typical beach paraphernalia and snacks, a cafe, and public toilets (though they are very widely spaced). We rented a table with an umbrella and 4 chairs for 200RMB for 4 hours (a full day, which lasts from 8.30-4.30, is 300RMB). Loungers don't seem to be available on any of Qingdao's beaches, so we just took a blanket for when we wanted to lie down. We would recommend going here on a weekday in September, as it was busy but not crowded by any means, and the weather was perfect!

Very popular beach, especially around May 1 and 2. Lots of wedding pictures are taken here during the day, It's beautiful at night as well.
