In 1961, the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia acquired altogether 88 works by Paul Klee, which form the foundation of the museum’s collection. Celebrated in 1986 was the inauguration of the newly-constructed building of the Kunstsammlung am Grabbeplatz, with its characteristic black granite façade. Working in the tradition of Arne Jacobsen, the Copenhagen architectural office of a Dissing + Weitling created a noble, restrained building whose detailing is typical of the period, and which yielded primacy to the outstanding works of art on display. Inaugurated in July 2010 together with the reopening of the totally renovated existing building is an additional exhibition area measuring 2000 m², which features state-of-the-art exhibition technology and takes the form of two pillar-free exhibition halls – thereby bringing the total surface area to 5000 m².

We visited for a particular exhibition which was great. After that we took a trip around the permanent exhibition which is truly wonderful; assuming you like modern art of course. We didn't even get to see everything on show as we ran out of time. For instance, I didn't see a single Paul Klee, for which the museum is famous... But if you want to wander through all the various movements, trends, groups and collectives of the last 120 years then K-20 and K-21 are a good place to go. All the top names are present; you won't be disappointed.

A gem! the K20 gallery has an impressive collection of twentieth century abstract paintings. A variety of Paul Klee’s masterpieces, Picasso, Magritte, Miro, a couple of Dali’s, max ernst, some great Of Bacon’s, Mondrian, Braque, Delaunay, Marc, and it goes on and on, leger, Rothko, you name it. My own favourite De Chirico and Kandinsky. In a great light building with lots of space and finesse. Spend an hour or two looking at the paintings and you will View Düsseldorf from a different angle. Lots of food for thought. Great temporary exhibitions too, like the one by Carmen Herrera

Redesigned by Oswald Mathias Ungers in 2001, the Museum Kunstpalast is situated in the centre of Dusseldorf, directly on the river Rhine. Since its re-opening, the museum has achieved international fame with numerous high-caliber exhibitions, including MIRO, DALI, WARHOL, CARAVAGGIO, EL GRECO AND MODERNISM and GURSKY. The Museum Kunstpalast collections are also highly regarded worldwide. These include the Gallery of Paintings with the acclaimed Rubens gallery, the Department of Prints and Drawings with more than 80,000 objects, the Sculpture Collection, Department of Modern Art and Glasmuseum Hentrich, which with over 10,000 works houses the most comprehensive glass collection in Europe. The Robert Schumann Saal is also part of the Museum Kunstpalast and has made a name for itself with its own ambitious program.

The Museum's collection consists of an art gallery - paintings by old masters, including Rubens and L. Cranach the Elder; paintings of the XIX century - the work of A. Beklin, M. Lieberman, A. Menzel, K.D/ Friedrich, and art of the XX century - A. Mack, F. Mark, K. Rolfs, L. Kirchner, E. Nolde and many others. The collection also includes a collection of graphics -, Michelangelo, P. Veronese, Raphael.

Added in early 2002 as the second main pillar of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen and accommodating contemporary art was the Standehaus am Kaiserteich, until 1988 the seat of the Parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia. Four wings with continuous arcades surround the building’s central public area, a spacious plaza. The creative treatment of this representative building in the Historicist style (1876-80) by the Munich architectural office of Kiessler + Partner created a modern museum building with a striking glaze domed roof which shapes the building’s aesthetic and at the same time spans an expansive sculpture garden located on the uppermost level. Together, a flexible hall for temporary exhibitions in the ground floor level and the upper galleries comprise more than 5300 m² of surface area.

Excellent modern art museum including interactive displays. There is a free shuttle to the sister "K20" museum and you can buy a ticket to both for cheaper than buying two tickets
