A Unique Historic Gem in Batopilas

Reviewed By ok3t

We spent two nights at the Riverside Lodge. This was my second time at Batopilas. The first I stayed at Casa de Minas which I enjoyed very much. I decided on this second trip to try out the more expensive Riverside Lodge and am so glad we did. The property is just amazing! You feel as if you have stepped back in time: the furnishings, the gardens, the attention to detail. Martin could not have been more welcoming. Friendly and professional. If you're traveling on motorcycles as we were, he will provide you with a secure place to park them. Umberto will prepare a wonderful breakfast, served on crisp linen. Sonia, who is the English speaking liaison for booking and general questions went above and beyond with her language help for our onward bookings in Basaseachi and Saharupia. Ignore the fear mongering about Mexico and Batopilas in particular. The scenery on the ride from Creel and especially the road down into the canyon is spectacular. Batopilas is a magical and unique place to begin with, and the Riverside Lodge will make your stay that much more memorable. We cannot wait to return.

Casa Real de Minas de Batopilas

Trip review Batopilas from 2018 — stayed at Casa Real

For Batopilas check other accounts but some info/ suggestions below not in other accounts: the Presidencia (town hall) contains some great murals and sometimes a debit card can produce pesos at the main counter but I changed US$ with Martine (? spelling) at Real de Minas where I stayed. I chose to walk to the "lost cathedral" not along the road but across the river from the road on paths eventually fording the river and going the road -- school kids do this every day, a sturdy stick helps balance fording the river, socks do help with grip, and documents etc in plastic bags is a good idea in case of a tumble. There is a small grocery store just past and across from the school a few hundred meters beyond the cathedral. If store is closed the lady of the house across the courtyard from the store will probably open it. Beyond the "cathedral" and just beyond the cemetery and below the cemetery a path leads back towards the church and down to the river -- a lovely bit of canyon riverside, beach, rocks, cliffside with eagle? nest. I have swum there, walked back upstream, fording the river a few times before the "cathedral", to the footbridge upstream from the village entrance. I have also gotten a ride back to Batopilas from the village ... many drivers on the road are happy to give rides. And of note — Martine of the house just at the end of the concrete pavement coming from Batopilas with a high stone retaining wall dividing the property from the road, speaks excellent English, buys cattle up in the hills above the canyon and sells them in Texas. I spent a morning with him driving up to his uncle's place where Martine lassoed some calves employing a leather rope lasso made by the uncle on the ranch, the calves after being hauled into the truck were branded. I breakfasted with the extended family, tipped Martine M$500 -- generous from one point of view but but I did have a unique experience. If you do want to connect with Martine, hire him as a guide or whatever, give him a chance to get to know you, do proceed slowly, if you are not going to be comfortable bouncing along a narrow dirt road in an older truck don't get in truck ... His wife's name is Johanna, she speaks no English, his tel supposedly is 6624003111 but telephone didn't work for me. From Batopilas I traveled to Urique in one long day: 5 a.m. van to Creel, breakfast and a quick chat at 3 Amigos that did lead to a change of plans, 10:20? a.m. bus to Divisadero arriving ?11:30, left baggage at ticket station at park entrance just uphill from bus stop near railway station and then wandered the path on the canyon edge of the park etc for close to two hours before retrieving my baggage, and settling in for a beer in the very pleasant bar area of Hotel Divisadero Barrancas, a few minutes from the train station. Trains stop for 15 minutes in Divisadero so the side window of the bar area should reveal unusual activity and thus the arrival of a train, giving plenty of time, to finish a beer and get onto the train. I left on the train at about 1:45 pm travelling 2nd class to Bahuichivo, tickets are bought on the train for 2nd class, and I think normally can be bought on the train for first class (I did buy a first class ticket a few weeks later between Divisadero and San Juanito -- 2nd class wagons run only 3 times a week). At Bahuchivo buses and vans await the Los Mochios train, one goes to Urique, usually making a longish stop in Cerocahui. I usually like to get out of buses/ vans at wander around, after checking with the driver as to how much time I have. My transport arrived in Urique about 13 hours after I left Batopilas. Urique - Batopilas straight line is less than 40 kilometres. I am guessing rough back road travel between the two points might take 5 hours and perhaps a driver with vehicle could be secured for three people for not much more than the cost on public transport, my route, for three people. (Public transport cost, my routing, one person about M$1000.)

Nice, basic hotel

Reviewed By BackRoadBruce

Nice basic hotel with a courtyard overlooking the river. Unfortunately, a full hotel and a late arrival put us in a room overlooking the main street just off the town plaza, which was noisy. It was a basic room, clean and fitted with two single beds and a small bathroom with a shower. Light fixtures were bare bulbs, two out three which worked. No WiFi available. The town's free WiFi service, available in the plaza, was out of service. It was an adequate basic room for an overnight stay and very convenient to walking the town. Secure parking provided.
