6 Top-Rated Hostels hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear, England

April 24, 2023 Stefan Strunk

Once a shipbuilding city, Newcastle's flashier claim to fame is nightlife. Throw in a heap of premium restaurants serving foods from all over the world and it's no wonder young partiers choose to blow their hard-earned (or not-so-hard-earned) cash in Newcastle. While these amenities are certainly a draw for the hipsters and culture-seekers, it's the locals that make Newcastle a truly special place to visit. "Geordies," as they are often called, embody the pride, industriousness and resilient spirit of their city.

Location was good, beds were comfortable but that's the only good thing about it. One of the staff members acussed my friend for spitting down the stairs in which she was completely wrong apparently she seen him on CCTV but it was someone else. You have to climb 2 flights of stairs to go to the bathroom and the shower. No towels provided for guests. Sometimes toilet paper isn't replaced by staff when empty. The kitchen is beside the bathroom, there was a constant smell of Indian food throughout the corridor. No one seemed to clean up after themselves, of course cooking your food is completely ok but the constant smell of curry, korma etc was horrendous when trying to get a shower or go to the toilet.

Firstly I would like to start on a positive by saying the location is fairly central, unfortunately it goes downhill from here. When we arrived we had what seemed to be a lovely gentleman, check in was very straight forward and fast. We where then asked to pay a £10 deposit per person, not an issue. When we where paying the deposit the gentleman then went onto explain how he’d left the premesis earlier that afternoon and left our key on the desk in case we arrived, which was absolutely fine until he followed with, on his return a random lady had come in who claimed to be us. She then swiped the key and it wasn’t return. Being 5 young ladies we where thwn fairly concerned that someone else has a key to our room with our valuables in. When asking if she could get in our room he simply shrugged. Not very comforting. Then once checking into the room it looked quite clean at first but when I went to go to the bathroom it appeared to have reminence in the toilet of the previous occupants and there was shampoo all over the shower screens and toothpaste on the sink. We also had to get the gentleman not long after checking in because none of the electrical sockets in the room would work. This was quickly rectified but not the point. Upon check out the gent went to check our room for our deposit back. We made him aware on our departure that the toilet had been blocked. So he then refused our refund and tried to charge us £50 for a blocked toilet. Serval other members of my party and I offered to go unblock it if he could give us a plunger. Apparently this establishment isn’t equipped with a plunger and said it was our fault for putting ‘the wrong things down the toilet’. After a battle and 2 of our party actually going back and unblocking the toilet we finally got our money back. It is absolute absurd that a hostel type facility has no plunger on site and even worse that they think it’s OK to charge £50 for a problem that can be resolved in 5 minutes. I would strongly avoid this place.

I booked this hotel for a work trip on a Tuesday leaving Wednesday. Found the hotel easily enough. Guy on reception checked me in fairly quickly, i asked for a printed receipt but he wouldn’t give me one despite the printer being right in front of us. Fair enough, no big deal really was just easier to say don’t worry. I stayed in room 4. As he showed me to my room there was a stained dirty pillow case loose on the bed which he quickly and embarrassingly removed. I had to ask for toilet roll which he brought with fresh towels. The room itself was dirty. The carpet had clearly never been cleaned. The toilet smelt of smoke (not sure if it is near a smoking shelter?) which remained for my whole time there. There was damp all over the ceiling. It was that dirty i would not use the shower - no need for the fresh towels. I woke up with a cough and heavy chest which i see on other reviews has happened to other people. I wish I had checked them prior to my stay. The bed was ok and i slept fine. I saw Newcastle United were at home so i walked the 2.1 miles into the ground and got a ticket so I did not have to stay in the hotel that evening and i just went back to sleep. Area around the hotel is rough, with litter and parts of furniture on the pavements. This isnt the hotels fault but part of the whole shoddy experience. I dont expect much for £35 but i would expect better than this hotel. I would pay £15 at best. How this place can trade in that state is a shock. Do yourself a favour and stay elsewhere.

Arrived and there was nobody in reception. Finally got hold of the "managers friend" through booking.com and he showed up a few minutes later and explained the people in the room we were supposed to be in had not left yet which wasn't great but OK. He said we could leave our bags there but I wouldn't trust then so we kept our bags in the car. Went to a festival in the city centre and were back by 11.30, got into our room which was small but clean. There was a TV which didn't work and a kettle with no plug and no tea/coffee or cups which was odd. There was a group of people in the rooms above us who set off the fire alarm by smoking in their room at 4am When we checked in the guy asked for a damage deposit of £100 for 4 of us. My friend paid this via bank transfer and was told he'd have it back within 24 hours of checking out. This was in October and now in January and after several calls and text messages being ignored, he still hasn't received his deposit back (this seems like a common occurrence). Absolute scammers don't give these guys your money, I read the reviews and thought we'd give them the benefit of the doubt because it was cheap but after them keeping the deposit it didn't work out much cheaper than a standard hotel. Avoid at all costs

We paid £130 for one nights stay here and when we arrived, it became apparent that this place is absolutely not worth the money. There was faeces in the toilet, no door on the shower, limescale and dirt all over the shower, mattresses stained with urine and rotten floor boards. In the room was 1 set of 3 bunk beds , no chair, no mirror, a window that opened 2-3cm it was very claustrophobic. Absolutely would not recommend. I would expect to pay about £20 per night to stay here, and that’s being generous!!!

The Worst Hostel I have Ever Stayed!!Do not stay here!

Reviewed By philg936

This has to be the worst hostel I have ever stayed at in 13 years of travelling. I have travelled in many cities within many countries of the world...and this place is up there with the worst of them. The location is bad, it is situated well outside of the main city centre in the roughest, dodgiest part of town, where a lot of criminal activity takes place. The staff are unfriendly, the rooms aren't cleaned regularly. When I arrived the floor was covered in cigarette ends and the linen was dirty, had not been changed in days. Theft also happens here, I had my towel stolen and my room mate had a small amount of money stolen. The general vibe at this place was more of a doss house to suit homeless people rather than travellers of any description. I reserved 3 nights at this hostel but only stayed for 2 because I didnt feel safe so left early. All in all an unpleasant and eye opening experience. Avoid this hostel at all costs!!!!
