City Tower

I was in the area in early December and the market area around the tower was full of vendors of all sorts with wonderful food and crafts. Seemed more of a local market than tourist. Few of the vendors spoke English, and the prices were absolutely not what you would pay in most tourist locations.

Tiergarten Straubing

I have been taking young family and friends here for many years. Located on the outskirts of Straubing with lots of parking spaces, however in high season this is sometimes not enough. There is some overflow parking on a grass area and on the street.
Small cafe in the middle of the park and a restaurant serving local dishes is located near the exit.
Good selection of animal and a petting zoo for goats is available however, some animals advertised were not there when we were there an unfriendly staff nearly bit my nose off when I asked about this.
Nevertheless, this would not stop me going back to this family friendly attraction.

The church dominates the Straubing skyline and is easy to find off the pedestrian area. At the moment there is renovation work going on inside, but the church is open. A really wonderful place of worship.

After a nice 15 minute walk from the town center along the Danube, you stumble upon the tall church and old cemetery. The places is peaceful, with its old gravestones and monuments surrounded by tall trees, almost magical. A stroll around the church is perfect to relax and enjoy.

The exhibits are very well laid down and present the pre-history and history if the region with excellent archaeological findings. Some pieces are outstanding! Well worth a visit.
The only drawback, no English signage; only a brochure with an overview of the exhibits. I would have given it an Excellent otherwise.

Gaubodenvolksfest

This former agricultural fair, first held in 1812, has long since grown into Bavaria's second-biggest Volksfest (a traditional festival with fun fair). It has largely kept its unique character as a very local festival (Gäuboden is the region) and its cosy atmosphere, even in today's more fast-paced times. Over 120 stalls and fun fair attractions and 6 excellently equipped marquees with a total of 24,000 seats in extensive, modern grounds offer entertainment and tasty culinary delights. Every year, one of the highlights of the festival is the colourful parade: Around 2000 participants from various local clubs, traditional costume and folk dance groups, accompanied by brass bands, parade through the town together to the Volksfestplatz Am Hagen.

It's something like the Oktoberfest, just slightly smaller. Small town, too, so all taht bavarian stuff feels and is much more authentic, genuine and relaxed. People walking around all day in their traditional attire. Less expensive than Munich and the Oktoberfest, too!
