If you are visiting the Connemara area in Ireland, a stop at the Killary Sheep Farm is an absolute must!! Our group of six had the opportunity to visit recently where we viewed a sheep dog demonstration given by Tom, the owner. The level of expertise he has with his highly skilled dogs was astounding. Our visit to the farm proved to be the highlight of our trip. Tom took the time to explain the process of sheep farming, and engaged us in delightful conversations with many good laughs included! The beauty surrounding the farm will take your breath away. Situated on the Mountains overlooking the Killary Fjord, the views are quintessential Ireland – lush green pastures filled with sheep, stone walls running the course of the farm, all leading down to the beautiful fjord below. And if you are lucky (as we were), you might catch a double rainbow or two! Make sure to include this perfect adventure on your itinerary – you won’t want to miss it!!

Killary Fjord

Reviewed By preglad - New York

A fjord is yet another stunning visual expression of nature's dramatic bounty. It's essentially a submerged valley between Mountains where the sea has created an inland pool of sorts. Ireland's version is rare in Euro points south of Norway.
The ride midway from County Mayo to Roundstone becomes ever intensely visual as we enter and engage a series of Cathedral like containments culminating at Killary Harbor and Lenane. Its charms are somehow atypical of a myriad of other Irish West Coast wonders. That it's located a bit inconvenient to access by traditional hordes of short term tourists helps to maintain its somewhat isolated delicate balance.
The entire immediate region unveils a change of plans compelling landscape of bulls-eye Wild Atlantic highlighst for any and all inclined toward a celebration of earthen delights.

The Sheep and Wool Centre

Reviewed By DKG80 - Toronto

Having visited a sheep farm and shearing demonstration, we were keen to learn what happened to the fleeces next. So we went to the Sheep and Wool Centre in Leenane. We didn't realize that there were scheduled visits (you can't just go in when you arrive) so we arrived just too late for a visit and had almost an hour to kill. The staff kindly recommended a waterfall to visit not far from the centre that was definitely worth the trip. When we returned, there was a short but informative video about the history of wool production in the area. After, a lovely and kind gentleman (I'm afraid I didn't get his name!) showed and let us have a go at carding the wool, spinning it using three different methods, then demonstrated weaving on a loom. He was so kind and friendly with us and our three kids, we can't thank him enough for the experience!
