John Day is a city located about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Canyon City in Grant County, Oregon, at the intersection of U.S. Routes 26 and 395. The city was named for the nearby John Day River, which had been named for a Virginian member of the 1811 Astor Expedition, John Day. The city was incorporated in 1901.

Kam Wah Chung State Heritage Site

Hours posted are for May 1 through October 31 when we are open for the season. We are closed from November 1 through April 30, except during spring break, which is usually the last full week of March. Please call ahead if you are planning a visit, we may be able to accommodate! I wasn't sure if the Visitor's Center would keep my kids' attention, but we picked up the Junior Ranger packet & it was perfect for them! The views were amazing & the kids enjoyed the short hike that we did!
