Snaffle Bit Dinner House

We always look forward to visiting Snaffle Bit when we're in John Day. It's a great family restaurant where everyone is friendly - including other customers - and the food is always good. The steaks, salads and margaritas are very good and everything is made from fresh, quality ingredients. The people are the best part though - I always have a great experience and leave the restaurant smiling.

I have two very picky young children, and this place made everyone happy. The prices are very reasonable and the food was typical DQ fare- burgers, fries, shakes, chicken strips, and lots of ice cream choices.

Russell's Deli has been a favorite staff lunch resource for many years. Delicious thick sandwiches, salads and sides custom made over the phone or faxed in. The deli section itself has a bounty of sliced meats and cheeses plus dried sausages and beef bacon that is SO good. Holiday smoked turkeys and hams have been a tradition locally for many years. They won NorthWest Meat Processors Association's Reserve Grand Champion Bone-In Ham award in 2012. Both for travel and for our home kitchens, Russell's is a delicious deli.

Friendly staff. Very reasonable. The huckleberry pancakes were great. Also had sausage and eggs and of course, coffee.

The space is divided between Mabel's Cafe and Eve's Sweets bakery. Mabel's is on Canyon Blvd. at Park Street. Eve's Sweets is behind Mabel's at the corner of Park and Washington. We had a little trouble finding it because Google Maps took us to the Shell station, a quarter of a mile north of the real location.
Great coffee to start. I enjoyed eggs, sausage patty and killer fried potatoes for $5.50. My wife had 2 pancakes topped with berries for $6.00.
Eve's Sweets bakery is in a bright location reminiscent of a French patisserie. Selections included blueberry muffins, pumpkin cream cheese muffins, Mississippi Mud Brownies, streusel coffee cake, and cinnamon rolls. Everything we tried was excellent and reasonably priced.
Everything is made from scratch and you can tell! Highly recommended.

We had been recommended to try this brewhouse and we enjoyed our visit for a couple cold ones! Great atmosphere and friendly attentive service. They post the beer selections, with descriptions and alcohol content and have a good variety to choose from. We were there at "happy hour" so it was a little less than at regular times, it was $20.00 for 4 glasses including tip. We didn't eat but the food coming out sure looked good! Will definitely stop again when in area.

I'll be returning here often as we have recently purchased property here to build on and looking to do business with local businesses!!

Grubsteak Mining Co.

Reviewed By Vincent M - New Orleans, Louisiana

The Grubstake is a local institution: been around for decades, but unlike a vast array of other things in John Day, it ain't fossilized yet. Nope, they still serve up hefty half-pound burgers, and hot-out-of-the-fryer French fries (see photo). Don't miss their desserts: the dessert display case is smack dab in the middle of the eatery. Their beer selection doesn't match 1188's a few doors down, but they do have a few craft brews, as well as bottled beer for those of us are not finicky. Do dress code, so gentlemen needn't wear a coat and tie. A parka and wool scarf are recommended for January however. No need for reservations: we got immediate seating 16 hours before the total eclipse! The sign says "seafood" but I would stick with steaks an burgers; you can't go wrong with eastern Oregon beef. They also now serve breakfasts.

Squeeze-In Restaurant & Deck

Reviewed By EffStop - Meadow Vista, California

Fourth of July weekend, busy time in the area. A diverse crowd in the restaurant, tables full. Locals have been invaded. Extra Law Enforcement, Rainbow People this year, and tourists adding to the population. 3 waitresses trying to keep up, they're overwhelmed. Once you get one the service is fine, orders are correct, someone filling the coffee cups & water glasses. If you're into people watching this was the place.

Breakfast items, omelette, bacon & eggs, pancakes were the orders of our group. Everyone thought the food was good. Coffee plentiful, water glasses refilled. It was a holiday, we didn't have a big agenda, so just kick back & watch the waitresses run between tables.
