Several times a week we walk one of the trails which are well laid out and challenging. Great venue for events, weddings, and sporting activities. Kayak rentals and launching availability, dog park and children’s playground are all features. Just steps from downtown historic Smithfield with shopping and fine restaurants. A prime weekend destination.

Isle of Wight County Museum

Museum chronicles the history of the Isle of Wight County with a special emphasis on water, ham and agricultural industries. The exhibits include prehistoric fossils, Native American and Colonial artifacts, a turn-of-the-century country store, displays interpreting the Smithfield ham industry and perhaps the museum’s most notable artifact: the world’s oldest, edible cured ham.

Very fun place to visit and lots of interesting things to learn about the County seat. It’s worth the small price of admission and will take about 30 minutes with small kids.

Smithfield Farmers Market

Happened to be visiting for the weekend and after a great breakfast we saw the Farmers Market, great atmosphere, numerous tents with all kinds of stuff for sale. Produce, arts and crafts, bread, meat you name it my friend bought some great looking embroidered towels. Music from a DJ and man I sure was disappointed I'd just had breakfast because there was some BBQ cooking right there that smelled so good. I'll just have to come back!

It's important to read the signs at the front entrance that explain everything as there are not really any signs within the fort area itself. There are nice shady trails to walk. Its a great place to picnic or spend a relaxing day at the small beach on the calm James River. There are picnic tables and bbq grills at the front entrance too. Also, it is dog friendly. There are no buildings to see, but it is an interesting place to visit just because of how old it is and to see the earthworks.
