6 Museums in Mannheim That You Shouldn't Miss

August 22, 2021 Jana Sager

Baden-Wurttemberg’s second-largest city after Stuttgart, Mannheim lies at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers and is rare among German cities for its layout, a grid pattern (or “quadrates”) similar to those found in North America. The grid was originally plotted in 1606 and emanated from Friedrichsburg fortress, which later became the site of Mannheim Palace. Today, it partly houses the University of Mannheim. The city’s iconic water tower and its beautiful Luisenpark are must-sees.

Technoseum Mannheim (ehemals Landesmuseum fuer Technik und Arbeit)

We just wanted to have a look at the Technoseum - and ended up spending about 5 (five!) hours there. The Technoseum offers lots of insight into the development of technology in the last 200 to 300 years. Everything is presented in a most interesting, even fascinating way with lots and lots of 'hands-on' presentations. It gives you an excellent impression of the industrialization as such and of its impact on man. And it tries an interesting look into what the future might hold. For kids (aged 6+) this museum offers more learning and hands-on possibilities than one child can handle in a day - so you'll have to go there more than once.

Kunsthalle Mannheim

The new build has a lot a independet space called cubes. Between these cubes you find a lot of space to rest or watch some large scale art. The gallerys have ideas like "art without man" or recreating a depot. There is also a space resevered for a large Anselm Kiefer. The smartphone app has some audio guides and a lot of text for most artworks on display, you should try it. Also the wireless works flawless.
