Caldamente consigliato.

Our first agriturismo experience!

Reviewed By Quanster

I'm not familiar with the agriturismo experience, staying in accommodation attached to farms in the countryside. This was our first stay, just off a highway in Santa Ninfa. It's a relatively newly developed complex, and they've done a nice job. The architecture is clean and simple but there are brightly coloured windowsills or flowers, so the effect is charming enough. Dinner and breakfast were good, hearty and simple. The staff didn't speak much English but we didn't have any problems in communicating. It is more of a basic place than the two we've stayed in since, and had a bit of a feel of a motel, a place that local travellers or workers might stay en route somewhere. But it suited our needs and was pleasant. It was only 69 euros for the room for two of us, and dinner was 45 for the two of us, including a bottle of wine, so it was pretty reasonable.

Cantina Funaro - Rooms

Great new hospitality venture for a well-established, organic winery

Reviewed By Carl G

Cantina (Fuedo) Funaro, just outside Santa Ninfa in the west of Sicily, has been making excellent organic wine from its 60 hectares of vines, for quite a few years... but recently it has opened three guest rooms, with another three to come in the autumn (we were the first English people to stay there!). Funaro is very well situated for visiting the Cretto di Burri, the ruins of Poggioreale and the Greek site of Selinunte on the south coast. The rooms are very modern and have great views west and north from their little balconies... and you can also sit out on the large terrace at the front of the building, which overlooks some of their vineyards. The welcome from the Managing Director, Giacomo Funaro (who speaks English) and his wife, Elena, is first class and they really make you feel at home. The breakfasts are typically Italian with home-made cake, ham, bread, jams, juices and coffee -- a slightly wider range of food would be welcome, but they are still learning the ropes. However, the main attraction of the Cantina is the wine-tasting, led by Giacomo, with some tasty snacks on the side, in their excellent tasting/ breakfast room -- which can be preceded by a tour of the high-tech wine-making facilities, if you want. Funaro really does have a collection of well-made sparkling, white, red and sweet wines (all organic) at very reasonable prices -- and you simply pay for the bottles you taste and can take them (re-sealed if you want) afterwards (the rooms have fridges). The best red is Omnis (Nero d'Avola) at E9.50, which is quite exceptional -- one of the best Nero d'Avolas I have tasted. The best white is Verdelicia, a lovely complex Chardonnay at E7.00. There there are two very satisfying champagne-method sparkling wines at E12 and E15 and a number of less expensive, really drinkable reds and whites at around E6. A great wine portfolio. Funaro does not do evening meals, but the restaurants of Santa Ninfa are less than a mile away. This is a really worthwhile venture that deserves to succeed.
