6 Day Trips from in Iquitos That You Shouldn't Miss

September 5, 2021 Venice Greaves

Make the port town of Iquitos your base camp for exploring the Peruvian Amazon basin. The river and rainforest are the main attractions, of course, and once in Iquitos it's easy to book a stay at one of numerous nearby jungle lodges. Closer to town, travelers recommend visiting the market and "floating village" of Belen, seeing colorful creatures at the butterfly farm and animal rescue center, and taking a cruise on the great river.

I came here in July 2019 travelling alone around Peru. I wanted to experience the Amazon jungle but was on a reasonably tight time schedule (3 weeks) so couldn't stay for too long. I found the experience to be one of the highlights of my trip and met some great people too. I actually ended up staying for 2 nights/3 days which I would recommend as 1 night simply isn't enough. I found the experience to be authentic and our tour guide was really knowledgeable about the forest and the animals there. The whole thing feels flexible which suited me, with the guide offering us a range of activities which we could do during the mornings and afternoons. We got to complete jungle treks, swim in the river with dolphins, visit local animal sanctuary's and even visit some local tribes. I would definitely recommend this for anyone travelling to Peru who wants to see the rainforest but who might not necessarily have the time/funds to complete a longer expedition. I am a 25 year old male.

This trip was easily my best experience during our visit to the Peruvian Amazon. The location of the eco-lodges is absolutely stunning, being both completely surrounded by rainforest and waterways. There is even a small and isolated village nearby where you can acquaint yourself with some of the locals. If you decide to visit the village, I recommend you try some of the locally made liquors and that you stock up for the duration of your stay. Our guide, who went by Edwin, was a wonderful person to experience the trip with. He made sure that we were well taken care of and his knowledge of the jungle and its inhabitants was extensive, to put it lightly. The rest of the staff we got acquainted with were all super friendly and always made us feel welcome. Every excursion was a trip to remember. At no point were any of us bored with the itinerary we were provided with. I do however have to point out that the included activities are not for the faint of heart, as we were constantly exposed to dangerous flora and fauna. To us however, this was what made our trips into the jungle so authentic and profound. The eco-lodges are simple, but provide you with electricity, cold showers (which is all you'll want due to the extreme heat) and shelter from mosquitoes. There is a large main hall where people get their water from, as well as where large groups gather to eat, socialize and generally have a good time. However, there is no wifi anywhere. So if that matters to you, now you know. The food was delicious. They even provided my brother with vegetarian dishes to accommodate his diet. Also, if you go fishing for piranhas they'll cook one that you've caught for you to try. Summarized; For anyone looking to experience the Amazon Rainforest at its most authentic, this is the way to do it. Though you'll have to decide for yourself if you or anyone coming with you can cope with the dangers inherent to such an expedition.

The adventure was simple style camping with nice hammocks and mosquito nets. The cook prepared home made meals the whole time! The reserve itself was beautiful and our guide, Adriano, was an excellent outdoorsman. Both he and the cook, Llersino, could make all sorts of animal calls and were so, so good at spotting all of the jungle creatures!! Very, very good guide and great trip all around ❤️

We LOVED this spot...it was the highlight of our trip and we are so glad that we did it! Highly recommend the experience! Our family did not do a guided tour so I can't speak to that. We were in our personal vehicle and drove from Huanuco to Huallay. The drive took about 3 hours and most of it was the Carretera Central, the heavily-trafficked 2-lane highway that links Lima to the jungle side of Peru. We went up to 14366 feet but dropped back down to about 13500ish when we got to Huallay. Huallay is a national park with an exorbitant s/2 (about 75 cents) entrance fee,. There is parking next to the entrance. You can also request a guide for the hikes that they offer...one is a 3-hour route and the other is 5 hours. Our group preferred to just take off on our own...the route is marked fairly clearly and honestly there is a lot of just open plain so it's not hard to get your bearings and head back to the entrance. It was about 40 degrees, I think...our jungle crew was not well equipped--we were in layers with a fleece, tennis shoes, and wool hats and gloves purchased in Huanuco--but we were not too cold. The ground is marshy, so be prepared for damp feet. We also took in thermoses with hot water for mate de coca, as well as snacks. The park itself is amazing! Our kids had a fantastic time climbing and exploring and hiking. Thankfully no one got altitude sickness although we were all developing headaches by the time we left about 4 hours later. We are so very glad that we went!
