Caldas da Rainha (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈkaɫdɐʒ ðɐ ʁɐˈiɲɐ]) is a medium-sized city in western central Portugal in the historical province of Estremadura and the district of Leiria. The city serves as the seat of the larger municipality of the same name and of the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Oeste (OesteCIM, Intermunicipal Community of the West). At the 2011 census, the municipality had a population of 51,729 in an area of 255.69 square kilometres (98.72 sq mi), with 27,378 residing in the city. We spotted this when closed but noted the weekend opening hours and made a plan to return. Thoughtfully and lovingly curated by fanatics of cycling, we really enjoyed the exhibition on the first floor of he museum which overlooks the park of Caldas. Some of our family are cycling enthusiasts but most of us aren’t and yet we all enjoyed its great collection of memorabilia, posters, life stories and medals/awards as well as original bikes. As the non-cycling enthusiast, my favourite was a Hanseatic trike for grown ups!!

Great waves, miles of golden sands, quite lagoon and plenty of restaurants. Not too busy, even in July. Perfect.

We stayed in the Sana Hotel opposite this park and to be able to simply cross the road into this park was a lovely surprise! It is almost a secret place, no crowds, but such a fabulous, quiet, romantic setting for a walk, a picnic or just to get outside and breathe. A ´Must See´ place.
