This is a really pretty town and if you at the right angle you can get all three church spires in one picture. The waterfront town is worth walking around with its colourful buildings.

Saltbox Brewery

This place was an unexpected find. The family made a decision to stop at any Breweries while driving through Nova Scotia. This one nestled in the scenic town of Mahone Bay was perfect. The family sat outside while some talented locals played Irish jigs. They apparently play every Sunday. Nobody had a bad beer. The flights were well worth it with the local assortment of beers that they had. I must stop for beer lovers.

Spruce Top Rug Hooking Studio

Our studio contains a wonderful collection of galleries featuring some of Nova Scotia's finest artists and craftspeople. It's located in a mid-1800's house on the main street in Mahone Bay. Spruce Top also provides a wide range of rug hooking services and sales.

Arriving at Spruce Top Rug Hooking, you enter the shop through the kitchen door and, as I passed by the clothesline which had recently dyed fabric hanging out, it brought to mind a trip home. When I visited, the owner Carol Ann was in the kitchen dying wool in the sink. She showed me how she uses a specially made hand cranked machine to cut the wool into the thin strips she uses to make her rugs. I am not a rug hooker (yet) but I asked many questions and loved learning about the different styles of rug hooking and wool dying. There is a "try me" stand in the kitchen, a shop that sells everything any rug hooker of any ability could ever want, and a showroom with brightly colored rugs both made-here and brought-in. The second floor is more interpretive, using the ECONOMUSEE style of information sharing which includes artefacts of the craft, a map showing the different locations where rug hooking is popular in this region, and a rocking chair next to a shelf full of books with patterns and more information. I can't wait to go back again and this time I think I'll buy a beginner's package to make my own rug!

Birdsall-Worthinton Pottery Ltd.

Reviewed By trainfan2000 - Hamilton, Canada

This is a wonderful little store on the main street. There is wide variety of pottery items for sale - from plates to beautiful jewellery and even some attractive cookie molds (with recipes). The owner was very helpful and took the time to explain how some of the jewellery was made - very informative. The prices range from reasonable to moderately high - but the quality and uniqueness of the items is worth it. Well worth the stop.
