Golegã is Portugal's horse capital and there can be no better way to get to know its beautiful Lusitano horses than trip out with Rita, Miguel and Jack (the Jack Russel). With Miguel leading the way we were taken on a carriage tour from the historic Quinta dos Álamos estate through the Paul do Boquilobo nature reserve and into the town. You get to take the reins and guide your trusty steed along the lanes and tracks. Back at the quinta we were up in the saddle for a first horseback ride on the magnificent (and patient) mare, Varina. The team are great company, perfect hosts, a wonderful experience for equine debutants.

I caught a glimpse of the glass roof of a building from our window at the Hotel Lusitano and decided toast questions. The studio is one of the most stunning works of iron work and glass I have ever seen. It is quite small, and a guide takes you through the meticulously restored photography studio from the 1800s. I know it may not sound like the most exciting thing, but trust me, if you like architecture and sheer beauty you will love this place.
