The Robin 2

Live music club

I hadn’t been here for years until recently and have been 3 times in a couple of months. During even this period you can see the makeover the lace is having. The entrances all freshly painted, the bar look fab and now a newly decorated restaurant upstairs, very much like a diner. The place is really making a transformation. We went to - the 80’s evening which was great, so many people dressed up to the gig, followed by SKA evening, which too for the first time in my life I saw men get up and dance first, followed by Cher and Madonna tribute more recently. She was a class act, great costume changes, great voice and backing dancers Really great value for money, a good night out and more importantly - no trouble in the venue.

The Trumpet

Jazz started here under the ownership of 'Les Megson' in the late 50's-early 60's, who, as the pub was usually not very busy, used to play his jazz records at quite a high volume, simply because he loved jazz!. This music was heard by a very talented pianist/instrumentalist who lived just over the road from the pub, Tommy Burton, who offered to play there free, just for the fun of it. All he got paid was the money that people donated on a collection tray, and this tradition still exists. People started to get interested in this music, and musicians also started to turn up with their respective instruments to 'sit in'. It became in effect a 'jam session'. Pop-group Slade were also local lads, and were very often to be found in the 'Trumpet', and the pub is still their official 'fan' club base with meetings every so often. Soon, one night became two, and two became three and it is now seven days a week!

This is a great venue. Jazz 8 times a week when most jazz venues can’t stay open. I hear there’s some character posting fake bad posts about the Trumpet. Take no notice. Come and listen. Support Musti.
