Leuchtturm Pilsum

Reviewed By sarahamina - Salzburg, Austria

The lighthouse of Pilsum is an El Dorado for photographers, no matter if the weather is fine or not. Actually I prefer days with bad weather to visit this place because it will be less crowded and more peaceful. The landscape surrounding the lighthouse is flat and just wonderful, you could describe it like that: "If ou look out of your window on Friday, you will see your guests which will be arriving on Monday." Rare plants and birds can be found in the area. The lighthouse has become world famous since it was the home of Otto in the comedy film "Otto - the movie" from the year 1985. The lighthouse was built between 1883 and 1890, then it did not work since 1915 due to WWI. It changed the owner serveral times and it always became more and more desolate. In 1972 it was meant to be demolished, but then in 1973 it was rennovated instead and then it also was colored in red and yellow, which makes is very unique until today. The inside is usually not open to the public, but you can get married there! There's a parking nearby, but it's pretty expensive, so that I'd suggest to come by bike, it's about 12 km away from Greetsiel, a very romantic and beautiful fisher's village. The area is just perfect for cycling and also hiking. In summer there are mobile toilets and two huts with foods, but both is rather expensive and of very low quality, just to feed "stupid tourists".
