While a simple beach on Lake Ontario, it is right next to CFB Picton Training area where in the 1950's, models of the Avro Arrow were launched to test wing shapes.
We love going to Point Petre, no matter what time of year, it's beautiful. Unfortunately, hunters have been going there and not picking up their shot gun shells. Prince Edward County has the highest concentration and abundance of migratory birds anywhere on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory Spring Birding Festival, May 10-19, 2014 – guided hikes, workshops, banding demonstrations and more.
We had an interesting talk with some commercial fishermen docked at the end of the road. The short walk to the lighthouse begins at the end of the road and takes 15-20 minutes. We saw many Monarch butterflies and did our best to avoid stepping on thousands of little frogs. It's worth the short hike for the scenery, even though the lighthouse isn't the most picturesque Great Lakes light.
