Kandiah Alpacas & Farmstay

Alpaca Farm Experience - Bookings essential. Enjoy a short walk through beautiful, lush, green typical New Zealand bush to come out into a paddock with friendly alpacas. Hand feed these amazing animals and hear all about their breeding cycle and their beautiful soft fleeces. See and touch some of last year's fleeces exactly as they were shorn from the animal. See how a fleece looks and feels after it has been washed and carded. Finally, see a scarf that has been made by felting this luxurious fibre onto pure silk fabric. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions about these gentle animals with their huge eyes and long eyelashes. For those of you interested in vintage cars, you can see a 1922 Stanley Steamer. Details are on our website. We also offer self-contained accommodation at one end of our eco friendly home so you can spend as much time as you like with these unique animals.

We had a fantastic fun and educational morning with Mark, Pav and their alpacas. We had a number of children aged 1-6yrs who loved learning about various native trees, enjoyed seeing how an old steam car works and LOVED feeding the alpacas and learning what happens to their fleece. Mark and Pav were so knowledgeable, accommodating and sweet. If you’ve got a baby you’ll need a carrier and there’s no signage from the main road but google maps led us straight there. Pack some water and snacks and enjoy a couple of hours in alpaca paradise.

I love this DOC campsite and the amazing access to what seems like an endless white sand beach. So much space, even on a hot summers day you can find yourself a lovely spot. Easy driving distance to Waipu for shops and cafes.

Waipu Cave

Absolutely loved this experience. I was recommended to go here by a local and I’m so glad I did it. Drive down gravel road for 10 mins, Fairly big car park with a public toilet & free overnight camping option for self contained. Enter through the cave as seen in the picture, walk across the stream to the left and follow it through. Quite an easy walk through the cave, don’t have to go too far to see the glow worms. highly recommend taking a head torch for ease, if not I used my phone light, worked fine to see where I was stepping. I wore wellies and friends wore trainers - wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet as you walk through about 2/3 streams inside to cross over. Shortly after us there was a guided group going through about 1pm so made us feel at ease that we weren’t alone and going along the right track. 100% do this!!

Nice place and casual adventure to see the amazing glow worms in the cave. Proper for family with children. Needs to walk in the water about knee height. So better wear long boots in winter or shorts in summer.
