10 Wine Tours & Tastings in Virginia That You Shouldn't Miss

November 4, 2021 Brain Ambrose

Virginia can make American history come alive. Visit Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, tour Civil War battlefields, explore the living history museum at Williamsburg… the possibilities are endless (if the kids object, break up the historical sightseeing with a visit to Busch Gardens). Arlington, site of Arlington National Cemetery, is just across the Potomac River from all the major sites in D.C. In addition to beaches and historical attractions, Virginia has plenty to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Active families will love the Blue Ridge Highlands, where hiking, canoeing and tubing are just a few of the activities offered. Couples might enjoy a romantic mountain cabin in Virginia after a day of hiking in Shenandoah National Park.

Second food tour I’ve taken in Richmond, and it was the better one! The walking was easy and not hilly like I was expecting since Churchill is known for inclines. The architecture in the area is beautiful but watch your step on the uneven historical brick walkways! Wish I had taken more photos of the restored homes. Wonderful unexpected wine tasting at Second Bottle, a new boutique wine shop. Portions to sample at every stop (5) were larger than expected; Proper Pie and Subrosa portions were HUGE and I ended up taking one bite and then packing up the rest of it for home later on. The only suggestion I’d make is to make Second Bottle the last stop and not the first so that guests can buy a bottle to take with them. I would have bought 2 bottles but I didn’t want to lug them around for the next 1.5 hours! It made sense to go there first since it was an “appetizer” stop- so maybe provide a map of the stops either online or on paper so that folks can find them again later. Our tour guide was fabulous; she was knowledgeable, personable, and well organized. This was a Mother’s Day tour for my sister and mother and me, and was a great way to spend a beautiful day outdoors.

When on the hunt for something particular; substitutes won't due! Well I happened upon this place because my mission was to locate a spot that still sells my dearly missed Woodchuck Cider. When your tastebuds request something so specific you just can't settle. My GPS led me to this intimate and appealing location with the promises of my search being over. Well to my disappointment McKenzie(SP?) graciously explained that they don't have it, but there may be something in their collection that just might satisfy me. With the sampling of their Aragon 1904 I knew that there had to be other treasures to explore. Before the moment was over I'd had an equally selective companion that agreed we could peacefully lay Woodchuck to rest because the offerings of Blue Bee Cider were beyond comparable. Other preferences-Petit Manchurian & Firecracker{not to be confused with the distaste of a cinnamon fireball, but due to its ginger infusion????}. The creative exploration of their ciders make it possible to please a wide range of tastebuds from sweet to sour. All with the serene(yet properly distanced) backrop giving nothing, but great vibes. Kudos to Carrie for the final touches with the melodic tunes of James Blake ????.

We enjoy Hollywood Cemetery. First time for a tour. Our guide gave us historical insights we didn’t know. It was a delightful experience. Since we scheduled for 12/26, our guide could not get to the electric car as the office was closed. So she escorted us in her car. Would be a 5 star review but the wait to try to get the e car was annoying

If you live in Va or visiting, I really encourage you to check out The Nature Bus if your looking for a day adventure or maybe a weekend. It's a family owned company and it's a great way to see of some of what Va has to offer. So far I've only been on two due to covid, looking forward to more. The owner Suzanne and her family go above and beyond to make sure all have a great time. Where ever the road takes ya, they always find the best informative guides. Also I love it's not a large crowd and all CDC guidelines are in place to keep everyone safe. If you're looking for fun and want to meet new people and just have a good time, in my opinion you can't go wrong. She's also open to suggestions for trips others may be interested in or if a group of family/friends want a specialized tour, she'll arrange that too. Suzanne and The Nature Bus are a gift to Hampton Roads and VA. They do trips most Saturdays and some weekends, do yourself a favor and check it out. I've lived here all my life and The Nature Bus has taken me to places I never visited.
