10 Transportation in New Zealand That You Shouldn't Miss

April 14, 2022 Leonarda Pillsbury

New Zealand (/njuːˈziːlənd/ ( listen); Māori: Aotearoa [aɔˈtɛaɾɔa]) is an island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island (Te Ika-a-Māui), and the South Island (Te Waipounamu)—and around 600 smaller islands. New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres (900 mi) east of Australia across the Tasman Sea and roughly 1,000 kilometres (600 mi) south of the Pacific island areas of New Caledonia, Fiji, and Tonga. Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last lands to be settled by humans. During its long period of isolation, New Zealand developed a distinct biodiversity of animal, fungal and plant life. The country's varied topography and its sharp mountain peaks, such as the Southern Alps, owe much to the tectonic uplift of land and volcanic eruptions. New Zealand's capital city is Wellington, while its most populous city is Auckland.

We had our car relocated from Lyell to the end of the Old Ghost Road. Buller Adventures provided an excellent service with great communication and we also got bonus shower vouchers so we could have a shower at the end at the Rough and Tumble lodge. Having the car waiting for us at the end was the perfect way to end a perfect trip.

We did the Bushwalk and Snack Run trip. Met by, and taken on tour by Mel this was a great fun experience. Can thoroughly recommend this trip to anyone. We stopped to feed the chickens, stopped to walk a beautiful Kahikatea Tree Forest, had yummy Milo and fed a Weka while stopped in a little Bush Camp and then to the end of the line to turn around (great fun turning around!), and head back to the starting point. 2 to 4 persons per converted golf cart Easy for adults and teenagers to drive - no steering required ! We really loved it!

This was totally different from the normal "tourist experience", & was a lot of fun. Fantastic operator with great commentary, and it was a lovely way to see the Clutha River. Reminiscent of the punt scene in Outlaw Josey Wales (Clint Eastwood) for those who like classic movies!

Great shuttle service. We used their private parking and transfer from their compound close to the trailhead. My only complaint is that the entrance/turnoff was not well marked with their tour name (maybe it was just us, but the sign had other things on it too, so we drove right past). :-) However... they provide a 'free' cold beer or soda upon pickup at the completion of the crossing. Man, that alone was worth the price! :-)

Ulva Island Ferry & Water Taxi

Adventure is allowing the unexpected happen to you! Experience Ulva Island - the pristine forested island and one of few predator-free sanctuaries in New Zealand- and the unique beauty of Paterson Inlet. Freedom Tours, guided walks and sight seeing with the Ulva Island Ferry for those who prefer the charm of a vintage wooden ferry or with a fast pace custom built vessel.

Rakiura, the skipper, did a number of drop offs and pick ups for us while we were on the island including our freshwater landing pick up and my snorkeling trip. He’s obviously experienced, safety conscious and caring. Between them the different companies work together and it feels like they know the whereabouts of every visitor to the island and are looking out for them (which apparently is true - it’s like hanging out with unobtrusive extended family). I’d recommend ulva Island ferries for your trip to the island but also for all your other water taxi needs. Flexible, accommodating and friendly.
