A perfect self catering option in Old Town Malia

Reviewed By SteveW08

Katerina and her staff ensure a perfectly relaxing environment for all here in bright, pleasant surroundings. Rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped and bedding and towels are changed every other day. Good reasonably priced food and drinks is available at the bar all day and there are plenty of sun beds available in the gardens. This is a well situated venue for those who wish to visit the restaurants in Malia Old Town (and who wouldn’t?) but is also secluded and quiet.

Great wee 4 night break

Reviewed By GillianJ254

Booked this hotel last minute to get some sun. The pool areas did not disappoint, the slides were great fun. Room was clean but basic but had everything we needed. Restaurant was busy, would have been nice to have fresh fruit at the breakfast sitting, it was available at lunchtime. Food could have been warmer was my only criticism. Also other 4 stars you have been able to get fresh omelettes but didn’t here, they do have the space to do so. Never had an issue getting a table and always found plenty to eat at other meal sittings. Asian restaurant you get one booking, very good food. The street food was amazing from 12-6, had something each day. Cocktails were lovely but not the strongest, however it would be nice to have a proper glass instead of plastic in the evening. Entertainment very good. All in all great trip and I would return.

A pleasant stay

Reviewed By JaneReid

Stayed for a week with my husband and another couple. Lovely staff, very welcoming. Perfect location. Couple of mins stroll to a gorgeous stretch of golden beach. Shops and Tavernas nearby. Pool clean. Loungers a bit worn and uncomfortable. Food pretty good but not very warm on several occasions. Puddings disappointing, only fruit available was kiwi, orange and apple slices. Would have loved done grapes or melon. All inclusive drinks stop at 11pm. Had a bit of a run in with Stef the barman on our first full day. We had been out in the resort since an early breakfast. Arrived back at 10:40pm and 3 of our group tried to order a round of drinks for the 4 of us. He was happy to give one drink each, was stroppy about us asking for a 2nd drink and refused a 3rd drink. Now I get that he can't have everyone stocking up on loads of drinks just before the 11pm cut off and I agree with this but bearing in mind we'd not used any of the all inclusive food or drinks in the past 12 hours I thought this was very unreasonable. . .but it really was his unprofessional, stroppy, rude manner in dealing with us that really shocked us. I think he might have had 2nd thoughts and maybe felt guilty about it because a short time later he came over and slammed another round of drinks down on our table. No smile, no apology. Anyway, the following day our husbands and to make the peace with him and apologise and he apologised too. All was fine after that, it didn't ruin our holiday but did leave a sour note. Would we go back again?? It's a really decent hotel and lovely location. I am not a fan of all inclusive though and there were hardly any UK people there. Mainly German I think, who weren't the friendliest and seemed to get preferential treatment with table service when the outdoor entertainment was on one night. We seemed to be the only people not getting offered table service for some reason? We probably wouldn't go back but others do and I can see why they have a really nice time.

A really lovely holiday BUT....

Reviewed By JanKir

My partner and I arrived late evening to a warm welcome from Vagelis the very charming and lovely barman who showed us to our apartment which was split level with the bedroom and shower room being downstairs. On reflection we thought that for our needs a single level apartment would be more suitable and asked if we could possibly change apartments. This was done within minutes and we were shown to a single level apartment with all the necessary requirements for our stay. A clean, comfortable bed, shower room and little kitchen/sitting area leading out onto a small patio area with table and chairs and clothes rack. The bedding and towels were changed and the apartment serviced frequently during our stay by the lovely, very hardworking Miranda. Joanna who works at the pool bar and the upstairs rooftop bar was also a pleasure to meet. She was so pleasant, articulate and kind not to mention hardworking, providing tasty, freshly cooked food from the menu if requested. The BUT in my review title and only downside to our holiday was the fact that the two idiots in room 105 were unable to conduct themselves with any thought for the other guests staying in the complex. They were loud, played loud music and got louder still once the alcohol and openly smoked marijuana kicked in! We were awakened early Sunday morning to loud banging and shouting, one of the idiots was locked out of their shared room and was trying to get in by taking a wooden chair to the door after seemingly knocking on other guests doors asking to be let in! The broken chair and scarred door were left for someone else to deal with while he decided to sleep it off on a sun lounger by the pool. This was unacceptable behaviour by any standard and senior management should have dealt with this pair to ensure that other paying guests were not further subjected to their loutish behaviour. Joanna was staying overnight that night and was also shaken by the experience and she certainly wasn’t expected to approach and try to deal with these two. However since they seemed to go from bad to worse it appears that they were given free rein to behave as they wished. So an otherwise lovely holiday tarnished by the behaviour of two grown men and a seeming lack of management intervention.

Quiet modern/rustic rooms but a bit run down

Reviewed By Sparkling_Julia

All in all a nice rustic hotel with modern interior although it has been run down a bit and has some impracticalities. But I honestly was expecting a bit more from it in terms of service, breakfast and the wine aspect. I was doubting to give it 3 or 4 stars. And personally, I wouldn’t come here again but that’s because I slept horribly here plus I was disappointed. And thats a very personal thing. My husband slept OK. The location The brochure said it was located on a winery, complete with a gourmet restaurant and wine tastings. But the ‘restaurant’ only caters for big groups and is mostly used for wines tastings with accompanying finger food. We were a bit disappointment since we were looking forward to gourmet meals and wine tastings. The rooms are located behind the big winery with ‘restaurant’. It consists of 3 rooms, tended by a very nice young woman. Sitting on top of the hill overlooking the vineyard with no noise, it really feels like a retreat. Directly in front of the room is a table and chairs secluded in a small square under a big tree. Relaxing! It can get chilly in the mornings and late in afternoon because of the wind but as soon as you go anywhere else, it’s a lot warmer. They provided a complimentary Boutari white wine. Really nice! But that’s where the wine aspect of the hotel ends.. The room Very spacious ‘room’ or should I say house. It’s an old building turned into a hotel room in a contemporary meets rustic country style (tasteful). In the remodelling they clearly made the attempt to do it right. Some of the hardware is of very high quality like the airco, furniture and router. But since then, it hasn’t been maintained. So the toilet paper holder is hanging on by a thread from the wall, the bugscreen is broken (so lot’s of mosquitoes) and the toilets and bathroom are rusting. Plus a lot of it not very practical, like the bathroom door that bumbs into the ceiling light.. Upstairs in the bedroom, there is a walk-in closet. And one (big enough) suitcase holder. Lot’s of books laying around where Boutari is mentioned in or about their brand (in 2 copies). A bit over kill. There is a small fridge containing a big bottles of water (free) which is added every day. The fridge has plenty of room, even a small freezer. The fridge was too cool, it frooze parts of the water in the bottle. The one thing that stood out was the smell. It smeled like a desserted old home and often smelled like sewage (probably from the shower of sink). Very off putting! A lot of different lights, even one with a dimmer makes for a very nice atmosphere. The windows have shutters which shut out all day light. Perfect! And the wifi emits a soft light to still see a little bit during the night. The bathroom Very spacious bathroom, all in a slick concrete finishing. Looks nice but is slippery when wet. The sink is so imense, it takes away space for your toiletries. And the water is hard to control (in both temprature and volume) so it easily splatters all over (your toiletries). Nice big mirror and a fantastic big shower. A rain shower with the biggest hand shower I’ve ever seen. But the hand shower is leaking badly, so not very practical to use. Nice big edge for plenty of toiletries and helpful to shaving your legs :) I wished they had a dimmed light to get the melatonin hormones going for sleeping. There is a hand soap, luckely a liquid one to not spoil an entire block of soap for every guest but it stinks.. (in my personal opinion) And a tiny bathroom rug, which I really don’t understand. It doesn’t fit the style and isn’t very practical. So, for the first time in my life I actually used the hotel slippers. There is a seperate toilet upstairs next to the bed. Big plus! Although that one is refilling water all night which makes a sound and is also rusting. The bed Really big bed, fantastic! I really had to look for husband in there ;) A bit hard (spring box) but doable. And good enough pillows. Soft but not extremely fluffy, but not the best if you’re a side sleeper. The blanket was a thin blanket with a sheet underneath. I personally hate those because those sheets end up everywhere and tangled. Although there is a duvet in the closet it’s way too warm if the airco doesn’t cool down enough.. I’m a sensitive sleeper but still, in 4 night I still didn’t sleep enough. The night stand is a cabinet behind the bed with shelves on the side. Very irritating, so we ended up using to the top, reaching up from the bed. Breakfast The first thing what we had to do when we arrived, was to fill in a form of what we wanted for breakfast and at what time (weird welcome). What we didn’t know was that this is set for all days.. Breakfast was delivered and set up at the table right outside the door. Very nice way to wake up and eat your breakfast! We had a bread basket with plenty of fresh bread. Every day a different one although never a whole grain version. Tea comes with lipton teabags of green tea, camomille and .. and we had delicious fresh squeezed orange juice. The yoghurt was as thick as cheese but not that tasty smooth yoghurt we were used to in Greece and it’s a little portion (just a ice cream scoop). The muesli was a sort of cruesli and sometimes different (one time with chocolate). The fruit salad was nicely variated but also a bit on the small side. Still, for the type of hotel I expected a bit more options and a little bit more in terms of proportions. You can set a time window like between 8:00 and 8:30. It will ussually come later then earlier. So plan earlier if you have to leave on time. Upon our departure, we had to catch a ferry so we had to leave early. But it wasn’t possible to get breakfast earlier than 8:00.. no other options like giving us breakfast the day before or to go or giving us suggestions were we can get breakfast easily. Not really thinking with us. The wifi Stable and pretty fast. Good connection troughout the room and a bit outside. The airco It works. The problem is, it has to cool down the entire space for it to work, so it cools down very slowly. There is a remote control but you have to stand close to it in a certain direction for ir to work. And often it doesn’t pick up the signal or in a delay. And there’s a lot of humidity so it has to work with. So every night I slept in damp sheets.. I hate that! The staff A very humble and sweet young woman brings breakfast, answers questions and cleans the rooms. She left her phone number to call with any questions. Not very practical, because it acts as a barrier to ask something and it costs a lot of money for foreigners to call outside of their own country. Unfortunatly she speaks very little English. Upon arrival we searched for someone and found a guy in the empty ‘restaurant’ who brought a bottle of wine and showed us to the room but couldn’t explain very much. Nearby Google maps points you to the Boutari land but just drive a bit further up the road where the sign says Boutari with a road to the right going onto the property. Drive to the parking lot next to the Boutari building and find someone there. The path next to the building leads to the room but isn’t paved all the way. My suggestions of nearby restaurants: * Mint of olives (like the red card on the table) is just a good place for simple Greek/Cretan food. Nothing special but very close by. * Peskesi in Heraklion (20 min drive). A very good traditional Cretan and even Minonian food. And has a nice vibe. Do make reservations! * Bakaliko Crete in Epano Archanes (13 min drive). A deli where they prepare food with their product in very high quality and in delicious twists on traditional Cretan and Greek food.

Beautiful comfortable place and very friendly staff

Reviewed By ArjanR75

We had booked the smallest room located at the pool area, which was very well decorated and furnished, but indeed a tad bit on the small side to stay for a whole week. We were offered an upgrade to one of the larger appartments halfway through our stay. Very nice place! Everything is very new and modern, but done tastefully and with eye dor detail. The staff are super friendly and helpful. Breakfasts in the bistro are good, with plenty to choose from. But also the dinner dishes are excellent! Some of the best food we had all week was served here. This was a great place from where we could explore Crete.

We have stayed in these wonderful apartments for over ten years. I cannot say enough about the family that run them. The are the most wonderful hosts and the apartments are absolutely spotless. Fine place for a night close to Heraklion

Quiet off main road.

Just right if you want a quiet layed back holiday, far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There is a busy road to get across, fortunately there's an underpass takes 10 to 15 minutes to walk into town. It looks a bit basic and could do with smartening up, but having said that,we would go back again.
