Great staff, minimal lodging

Reviewed By Cindy R

I wish someone had written an honest opinion on The Caravan before we spent two nights there. Thessaloniki is not an easy place to get to and when we arrived, we were very tired after a long train ride. The hotel is a glorified coffee shop with lots of young people studying in the lobby. This is fine if you are a young person looking for a cheap place to stay (although this was not particularly cheap). The lobby was crowded and unorganized and I honestly didn't know if I was in a hotel or a coffee shop. When we got checked in, we went up to our room on the 4th floor and it was about 95 deg in the room. The AC is not on unless the key is in the slot by the door. The room had a "veranda" which was a rooftop sauna with no shade and all the curtains were left open so it was miserable. I tried to call them to get another key so we could leave the AC running and go somewhere else so we didn't pass out from heat stroke but the phone didn't work. I honestly didn't know if it was a prop or a real phone since it was an old one with a dial. Found out later it was real - just didn't work - in fact didn't work the entire time we were there (yes - I did let them know immediately upon arrival). The room was very weird and very hostel like. Metal attached furniture, No shades on bulbs (felt like an interrogation room), only 2 pillows on the bed. They did have a "pillow menu" but we couldn't order any as our phone didn't work. Veranda furniture was disgusting. Obviously cushions were left out in the every rain, metal part was rusting, etc. There was zero shade (and it was hot!). There was an umbrella stand taking up part of the veranda but no umbrella to be found. Breakfast was good but they asked what you wanted and didn't quite adhere to that. They also asked if you wanted it delivered to your room and didn't quite do that either - we had to go down 4 floors, find our breakfast in the breakfast room and they then brought it up - which we had to eat quickly on our rapidly heating veranda. The room was so small there was no possibility of eating in there. I will say the staff tried very hard. My thinking is that no owners are onsite and the staff is contracted help and they have very little control over how the hotel is maintained (phones working, veranda furniture, general decor). They do their best and they were helpful in getting taxis. I honestly felt like I was in a dorm room and that was not the experience we were looking for at all.

Majestic: this word is not an overstatement when it comes to the Electra Palace hotel in Thessaloniki. Inside the hotel's byzantine-inspired exterior, hides a neoclassical heart: wood paneling, marble inlay and wooden floors, plush carpets, cabriole and chesterfield sofas, ornate furniture, luxurious details, generous amenities and, of course, breathtaking views: on a clear day one can easily see as far as mount Olympus across the gulf. Beneath the Electra Palace Thessaloniki's windows and balconies, lies the lively center of a vibrant city: Aristotelous Square. Something special

We were warmly welcomed by the lovely team on arrival. It was nice that they knew I was a returning visitor having stayed there forwork several years ago. This time I was here for leisure and the staff did everything they could to make us feel welcome. The receptionist was absolutely superb when I had a terrible dental problem and quickly organised an appointment with a wonderful local dentist who gave emergency treatment. That kind of help really is an example of going the extra mile. We experienced an issue with the safe in the room which the kind duty person sorted out in moments. The breakfast team was superb every day. What a delight that was with all the high quality ingredients too. The room was serviced to a very high standard and the in room coffee maker was an added bonus. We had a spacious balcony with a view of the sea during the day and of the candle lit cafes nearby at night. The hotel is very well located for sightseeing and shopping. Heaps of restaurant choices are easy walking distance and the on site one is very popular.

Flying light and often solo, expecting seamless comforts, a bit of local buzz, and highly professional yet completely unpretentious service, they’ll find nothing less than everything they need at The Modernist.

Lovely stay with a warm welcome!

Reviewed By dougstephens1

We booked to stay here in April this year but we had to change our plans and eventually visited in June. From the very start of the process the communication and service was excellent. Even when I had to cancel the April visit they were excellent and the refund prompt. They weren’t just efficient; warm, enthusiastic and welcoming too, so I had high hopes. I was arriving early and my wife joining me later. I asked for an early check in and they said they would if they could. They did. The room was one of their Large rooms. Not the biggest room I’ve ever been in; there are bigger rooms available, but it was clean and well presented. The shower in the bathroom was amazing and we had a balcony too that I asked for, so all in all, I asked for a couple of things to happen and they delivered both. There was even a hand written welcome note in the room with a couple of chocolate truffles! It was raining during our stay; loan umbrellas were provided. They helped bring our luggage up and when I asked for an ironing board and to borrow a phone charger (I’d left mine at home!!), they were straight up with them. Every conversation included a smile, good English (my Greek isn’t that good yet), and a sense of wanting to assist in any way possible. This is probably why they’re pretty much fully booked! Breakfast was upstairs on the 7th floor on the garden roof terrace. Delicious. Pretty much anything you could want and again, all the staff were welcoming and helpful with smiles. We stayed for one night and loved it. Is it the most spectacular hotel I’ve ever stayed in? No.. in Thessaloniki centre all the building are old but they’ve updated it well here and there’s nothing wrong at all with what I saw. Have I stayed in a more welcoming hotel, where one is made to feel like an important guest, where staff are enthusiastic in assisting you? No.. I’ve had the same great service at much more expensive hotels. On our original planned visit we were being our toddler (this time he stayed with his grandparents), and we’d asked for a cot. They were excellent at researching and even providing images of the cot so we were happy that it would be suitable; often in Greece they’re not. The note on the system about the cot was still there and they checked that it wasn’t needed when I checked in so it was great to know they knew who we were and what our needs for this stay were. Bravo to the team at The Modernist. Would definitely stay again. Great location, comfy room, great shower, lovely breakfast and the nicest, most welcoming people you could ever wish to meet!!

This wasn’t my first stay at this boutique hotel. The suite was facing the waterfront as I had requested. The staff is very attentive and are always available to guide guests in their needs, with great knowledge of Thessaloniki. Although I was in the city but a few nights, I have used the valet service for parking in the past. It’s very convenient. Normally not a breakfast person, the buffet was so diversified, I indulged every morning. The staff is the gem of the Daios hotel. From front desk, porters, house keeping and the restaurant staff, their warmth comes across. They are all attentive in a wonderfully subdued way. Attentive but not intrusive and it truly compliments the properties style. Ultimately, would I stay again….? Oh, yes. It’s the right size that you’re not treated as just another temporary tenant. They’re truly appreciative that you’re in their care. And it’s a special feeling every time I stay at the Daios.
