Short break in Hull

Reviewed By Stewart C

We had a two night stopover at the Ibis hotel in Hull May/June traveling to Hull by train. Our primary reason for visiting Hull was to see a concert at the ‘Bonus Arena’ and we chose the hotel because of its proximity to both the venue and also the railway station. We stayed on an additional night to take the opportunity to take a look around the Hull and the hotel is also well positioned to reach both the ‘old town’ and marina areas of the city. We were given a ground floor room and this was reached via a corridor from the reception area. The room was not large but suited our needs for a short stay. The room was furnished with flat screen TV, hair dryer and ‘open’ wardrobes (with hangers), and shelving to lay clothes on. The room had a double bed which was very comfortable (we both slept well), and limited tea and coffee making facilities. There were ample three pin plug sockets in the room one of which had USB sockets. The room had one window which looked out onto the hotel car park and this had a very good quality curtain which made the room very dark when pulled. The bathroom had a basin, toilet and shower with a reasonable amount of flat surfaces to stand toiletries on. Liquid soap and shampoo were available if required and also a 110/240v shaving socket. The bathroom appeared to take the form of a ‘pre-fabricated’ unit which is installed into the room as the hotel is constructed so consequently there is little sound proofing provided between the bathroom and bedroom. Breakfast was served in a room to the front of the hotel and comprised a fairly comprehensive buffet style arrangement complete with cereal, fresh fruit, pastries, cooked breakfast, tea & coffee, fruit juice and toast. There is not a large number of tables here but the staff on duty worked hard to clear and clean then after each use so that they were available for the next diner. Overall, the hotel appeared clean and well maintained and all of the staff that we came into contact with were friendly and helpful. We would certainly consider a return stay here if we were to visit Hull by train.

Homely Hideout!

We stayed in a superior room at the Hideout Hotel in Hull for two nights, as we were in town to see a show at the Hull Bonus Arena. The hotel is about ten minutes walk from the arena, it’s also very handily placed for the town centre, and there is reasonably-priced car-park just across the road. Our room was spotlessly clean, well-furnished, and comfortable. There was a mix of new and retro fixtures and fittings, and the kitchen was equipped well enough for us to prepare a couple of meals during our stay. There is a Tesco Express just across the road where we picked up the necessary shopping. The bathroom was luxurious, with a large bath-tub, and a lavish walk-in shower. Nice shower gel, shampoo, hand-wash, and good quality towels were also provided. The bed was large and very comfortable. There were TVs in both the living room and the bedroom, and also a DAB radio. Previous reviews have mentioned the noise from the cathedral next-door, we did hear the bells on a few occasions, but it didn’t disturb us, and earplugs are provided for guests who find it disturbing. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at Hideout Hotel, and we’d certainly stay there again if we ever returned to Hull.

Excellent, but beware of access issues due to A63 works

Reviewed By ElTelDel

We booked a week including breakfast and parking, to visit local attractions and nearby places. Room 105 was a reasonable size (it's disabled access) with a little balcony. It was quiet despite the nearby roadworks (see below) and the blackout curtain arragements were well designed. We opted for twin beds since none of the double beds are king size. There is tea and coffee, but no mini-bar in the standard rooms. Breakfast was good, including the cooked food. We had dinner twice and were impressed - the fish and chips were excellent. The staff are lovely and helpful. The marina is very nice, with some very good, if somewhat expensive, restaurants. At the moment (May 2022, till 2025) there are extensive roadworks at the sides of the A63, so the hotel has closed all the the rooms on that side. We never experienced noise problems during our stay. The hotel had no maps of the changed arrangements, which is poor. The previous access from the A63 is blocked off. My tip would be to put 'Jackson Street (Hull)' in your SatNav and then go along there and English Street, turn left up Commercial Street and then right at the top to the hotel. We had no problem parking in the outside car park (£10 per night), but then only half the rooms are open now!

It was so bad we didn't stay

Reviewed By NicNacT2

When we drove up to it I thought it was derelict it looked so bad. We knew from the price it wasn't 4* but nothing could have prepared me for how horrible it really was. The room was dated which is OK but it stank of stale urine (how the cleaners and management couldn't smell this is very surprising) and with a good shove the lock on the door would have given way, it really didn't feel safe at all. I sat on the bed when we arrived and nearly went through it onto the floor it was so old, on the upside the sheets looked clean but not a chance I was going to test them. We had booked it for 1 night as we were going to a concert but we decided to just drive home instead. When we handed the key in at 10.30pm after collecting our things after the concert the receptionist didn't bat an eyelid or ask any questions as to why we were leaving.

What a wonderful find. Situated in a beautiful traditional building, the pub/hotel is right next to the Marina, and is only a short walk over the bridge into town and to the Bonus Arena. Very friendly owners and staff to make you feel welcome. The free parking is a real perk. We had a brilliant night’s sleep in the exceptionally clean and nicely decorated room. Enjoyed visiting the pub too. We will definitely go back when visiting Hull.
