The George Hotel

Historic Stuart Hotel dating from 1510, once owned by Oliver Cromwell's grandfather, with picturesque galleried courtyard.

A Hotel trying so hard - but occasionally held back by antiquity, also staff-shortage

Reviewed By basilhoward

A very old, and only partially modernized, establishment. On the surface comfortable; fairly good food; a decent night's sleep. But under the surface: several future worries. Far too few breakfast staff. Too little use of the larger Restaurant for Saturday evening [ cost-of-living crisis]. Lots & lots of stairs for elderly guests... & a creaking wooden balcony [ still used for drama! ] about to fall down? And from the outside: Ballroom curtains collapsed in a heap: not a good impression? Perhaps The George should now draw on a Greene King cash-injection of a million pounds? All for the better.

Eagle Mill Country Boutique Rooms

Set within three acres of garden, orchard and paddock, Eagle Mill is an 18th Century millworker's cottage which has had a purpose built, architect designed bed and breakfast extension attached. The area has a countryside feel yet it is convenient to the market towns of Huntingdon and St Ives with Cambridge being a mere 13 miles away. The fast train from Huntingdon will deliver you to London Kings Cross within 50 minutes. The twin villages of Houghton and Wyton lie a short stroll away, as do the wondrous countryside and river walks of the Ouse valley. The villages boast two traditional pubs offering good food, a busy independently owned traditional shop, two tea rooms, an antique shop and an amazing art gallery which showcases the eclectic talent of local artists. The only operational water mill on the River Great Ouse is situated in Houghton and it is maintained by the National Trust.

There's actually nothing we could fault with our stay! Eagle mill is beautiful. We stayed in the Hemingford room, which is lovely. Comfortable bed, lovely products in the bathroom, very clean and stylish. Breakfast was freshly cooked by Sam, to perfection! The gardens are amazing, so pretty and peaceful. Sam and Sonia are the perfect hosts, we can't wait to visit again!

Good food but the staff were a little slow

Reviewed By StewClur

I booked a meeting room here for a team meeting. We booked into the restaurant for lunch, pre booking our food. The food was really nice, the team rated the chicken burger, beef burger, fish and chips and club sandwich. However the staff were a little slow with the service despite the preorder. We needed more flip chart paper in the room , it didn’t arrive until after we left. Good value for money. I will visit again.

Nice quality modern hotel

Reviewed By NumanDen

Had a very late check in planned but this was no problem as the reception is manned 24 hours. Hotel had also been helpful and communicative as I warned them of this. First thing I notice is ample parking directly in front of the building. Then the hotel, the decor and my room itself all very stylish with contemporary design, and as you'd expect lots of horse racing touches. I'd share the view of others on breakfast, some overcooked items and bacon just sitting in it's own fat. But breakfast staff were friendly and helpful. Nice stay, and I even took a sneaky look around the racecourse.

Comfy bed, basic, and cheap

Reviewed By Super H

It’s very true, you get what you pay for. We paid £40 for the night so weren’t expecting Hilton standards. The place itself is very basic and quite dated, but it was clean, and welcoming, the rooms were perfect for what we needed, the bed was amazingly comfy, you get proper mugs for tea and coffee and a tv that works. Breakfast was basis but just what we needed, toast and cereal with tea/coffee/orange juice. The little game room has a bandit and a pool table, the cues were a bit old but it didn’t stop us having a few games (0.50) a go. The little bar is manned by the same person as the reception desk. A pint and glass of wine is £3.50, they also sell crisps chocolate and pop. If you want to take your own alcohol and food to the room you can. There is a Tesco extra about 5 miles away. Lovely little find. There is an all you can eat Indian restaurant next door that is amazing.

What a great weekend, we will be back. 18 hole course was in excellent nick for the amount of dry weather we have had, the meals and breakfast where extremely impressive with the quality and quantity, accommodation was very clean with plenty of space, staff very accommodating, attentive and fun. The par 3 course was also well kept that was a brilliant time filler with our two club challenge, pro shop was very well stocked, but just didn’t get time to use the 10 pin bowling, pool and the gym (as if that was going to happen). See you soon.
